I'm so glad you brought "Read a Book Day" to my attention! I will fully be participating in this! I think I will read The Book Thief and Habibi and go from there.

This gives me pieces of hope to what would have otherwise been a shameful and dark day.

Both of those books sound awesome. What's Habibi about?

And yes, I can't think of any better way to respect the day than by enriching my knowledge, banishing ignorance, and enjoying my freedom to learn.

Wow, thanks so much for sharing that event; it's a wonderful idea. (Linking to the video on my Facebook, btw.)

You also remind me I should watch the film version of Persepolis. (Have you read Marjane's other comics btw? I really enjoyed Embroideries and Chicken With Plums.)

Haven't read the other comics and can't find them here. T_T

What are her other works about? Similar?

They're not as epic or gritty as Persepolis, but are both also based on real life.

Chicken With Plums is the story of her great-uncle's suicide over his favorite instrument being broke. It's depressing and funny at the same time and sort of reads like a fable.

Embroideries is about the conversations had by the women of all generations in her family about sex. It's very sweet and intimate.

Ooo, Embroideries seems especially relevant to my interests. I shall look for it online.

It was the least I could do for such a wonderful idea. It's good to know you're participating, too!

Awww, that's great. It's good to know the kids are getting involved and discussing it, too. Are any of them participating?

Ugh, kids these days and their no reading policies. It makes me long for a no TV month or something. Wasn't there a no TV month at some point? (I think there was when I was growing up.) Anyway, it couldn't have gone over well. XD I know not everyone's a lit nerd, but I still think books have something to offer everyone who is capable of accessing and reading them. They're just that awesome. And so varied!
