To start off, a writing meme!
Give me one character from any of my fandoms, and three alternate universes in which to place that character (pirates, fantasy, Harry Potter, Star Trek,) and I will write you a bit of fic of it.I've discovered that there's a pattern to my shipping which has gone undiscovered until this point: I generally enjoy

Pairing: Zutara
AU1: Pirates! (sue me, it sound fun)
AU2: Clue (like the board game
AU3: Katara as a fortuneteller/psychic(/oracle?) modern or historical
I'm weird, I like relationships where they fight or there's at least a feel of rivalry.

Katara, proud captain of the finest ship of her tribe, adjusted the currents around the vessel with a graceful sweep of her hand, carrying them further south. "You'd better be sure about this one, Sokka," she muttered. "If it's another dusty old library again, I'm going to keelhaul you."
Her brother had his uses as tactician, and there was no denying that he came up with some ingenious weapons- like glue bombs, and cannons that non-benders could operate, but as far as directions went he was fairly hopeless. The last place they'd tried to raid turned out to be a camp of nomadic hippie types who'd thrown flower garlands on them and declared them their groovy ocean leaders. And then sang them horrible songs.
AU2 Lady Katara of the house of Blue was known merely as Lady Blue to her friends, and right now, at the vast mansion of her good friend Lady Toph Bei Fong, she was beginning to get worried. Not because of the untimely demise of the Princess Azula in the library, but because she hoped no one suspected her of foul play. Her ( ... )

Anyways, h'm...I'm actually dipping my toes back into TMNT as of late because I FINALLY watched that campy (yet hilariously good) TMNT movie where they meet their alternate/past selves from the original cartoon.
The only problem is...TMNT has done like..all of those genre's except for what? Pirates?
You can choose what genre because I'm pretty sure they've done Star Trek/Fantasy/Almost everything...except for Harry Potter...H'm

Donatello made the decision that he was going to kill Renet. Yes. It was a wise, tactical decision that would ensure that he no longer would spend unforeseen amounts of time in any part of Earth's history. Especially not the pioneer period.
Definitely not when it involved him clinging to the bottom of a wagon, traveling across wide, endless expanses of tall, dry grass that was a ninja's nightmare, then trying to get in disguise so as not to be attacked.
Especially not when it involved him wearing for disguise, a large sun bonnet in pink calico, and a dress made for a very overweight woman. Those were the only clothes he'd found that would possibly fit him. Somewhere along the way, someone had shoved a paddle at him and got him to churn butter. So, there he was. In a scene right out of a Laura Ingalls Wilder book ( ... )

Interesting thoughts about the downsides of the series-star-pairing. I'd never thought about it that way. From a fandom perspective too, there is less one can do with main pairing of a series, because the series will make everything you write about AU quickly.
Anyway, since you mentioned that about pairings, I just gave one character, so it can be gen or have pairings if you want or whatever.
Character:Ino (or all of Team Ten)
AU1: Pirates (what? Would I jump off a cliff if everyone else was too?)
AU2: Film Noir
AU3: Cyberpunk

This. I'm always impressed when the writers do it right, and it feels natural and believable.

I can't really vocalize just where I'm okay with a Love Interest (I mean, Soul's a love interest as much as any character is,) but I can definitely say that some just seem set out there more than others.
I feel like part of it is how much depth each character has on their own, and part of it is how much I like the type of characters/type of romance it is, and part is just chemistry - which canon pairings work and which don't.
