is it because these people DON'T review and are defensive?

I don't understand why people are so quick to fly off the handle when anyone, no matter how politely, expresses the opinion that they might want some feedback on their fanfic. I mean, seriously. Saying: "I wish I had more reviews, not faves", or "It would be nice if you left a quick note," is not saying: "I DEMAND YOU WORSHIP ME, BITCH ( Read more... )

discussion, fanfic, fandom, probably wankbait

The thing is, when you work on something and put any amount of effort into it, it's always nice to get feedback. Even if it's just "lol, that line about katara doing the thing made me laugh" it's just nice to hear.

I don't understand why people get so uppity when authors/artist request feedback =/

People drive me insane. It's not like the authors are asking for much, just one little review it takes ten seconds to make and send. And it ALWAYS explodes into wank. Between one side screaming: "HOW DARE YOU OPPRESS US BY ASKING FOR REVIEWS, YOU ENTITLED BITCH," and another side going: "I'M AN AUTHOR AND I'M FINE WITH FAVES, YOU GREEDY JERK." I could strangle something.

Like others have said, it might be a partly an effect due to those writers who do threaten to keep their chapters hostage till they get reviews. And, it might be a bit of that instant gratification culture we have, especially online. When we can get all these stories from a few internet searches or whatever, I think people don't take the time to realize people put in effort for those stories or whatever, and just move on to something new after reading. And there can be that issue of lurkers and/or people who feel intimidated about leaving comments to authors they like because they think it won't mean anything, and those who'd like to leave a comment but some sites don't let them (like DW or deveient art etc ( ... )

I think that posting is not a stressful activity for most people. Honestly, I'm quite willing to blame human laziness, and then people getting their backs up when they get called on being damn lazy. Like you said, it takes ten seconds to write up a review and post it. I'm not trying to say people are obligated to review or they're horrible people, but reviewing is at least a polite gesture when the author put so much work into a fic for public enjoyment.

It's like...applauding at a concert.

I read in some other comment discussions, that some people dislike it because they are so stressed out in social situations that even internet interaction could be stressful. Which, admittedly, sounds like this would be a rarer case that it shouldn't be a common excuse, but... lol.

I love the analogy that commenting is like applauding at a concert.

I mean.. no... not politics... BAD! DOWN!

Yeah, ditto everyone else. The vocal minority are ruining it for the temperate majority. *shrug* Sorry.

I wish the temperate majority of reviewers wouldn't be such dickwads about it, then.

I've found the best way to get comments is apparently to leave off on a cliffhanger then forget to update for like six months.

*lol* This is true! Only in my case, it's 'and then I lose motivation and dump the fic, and people suddenly discover they liked it.'

All I know is, whenever someone writes a fic I like in my fandom, I'm like "ooh, better leave a glowing comment so they keep doing what they're doing!" because fics that I actually like are just so rare. I suppose that's what I get for not shipping the main pairings like, at all. XD
