holy racefail, batman!

May 20, 2010 09:58

So, this week's fail involves the current winner of the Miss American pageant, Rima Fakih of Michigan. She's the first Muslim to be crowned as Miss USA, which...I'm not sure how much of a step forward I can see that as. I am personally against beauty pageants and everything they stand for, anyway, unless we get a Mr. America that objectifies male ( Read more... )

Because then little American girls might think it's okay to be dark-skinned and Muslim. And then they'll start flying their tiny, sequined planes into IRS buildings while gyrating their half-naked, pre-pubescent hips to "Single Ladies".

Oh wait. White people already do that. Nevermind (google "7 yr olds dance to Single Ladies" and prepare yourself for the slut!fail).

Seeing as last year's winner was Conservative Barbie (aka Carrie Prejean) who spent so much time bashing gays that it's a wonder she got a chance to reapply lipgloss (now in Oppressive Pink!) I can see how the crazies think we're raining on their parade and stealing their "I'm going to use this crown to fuck people over" thunder.

It makes me laugh so very hard to think Muslims would care about the beauty pageant. Or that ANYBODY would care. In the last decade the Miss America ratings have tanked so much they haven't been on cable in years.

Maybe the conservatives can band together and teabag each other demand to see Fakih's birth certificate!

Oh, god, I saw that. Died over people trying to say that there was nothing sexual about what they were doing at all. Yes, America does tend to oversexualize things, even children and their behavior. However, when you slap skimpy bikinis on them that are clearly meant for older women, and have them dance to a song like 'Single Ladies', then it does come across as overtly sexual. And that's wrong. It's bad enough that female bodies are treated like public domain, it's even worse when it happens to children. For fuck's. Sake.

OH GOD. I am waiting for people to demand her birth certificate. I think we already have people deciding that non-white=immigrant, so that would fit right in.

People. The only thing Miss America is going for is beauty. Beauty. That's it. And that girl? Is SMOKING. I rest my case.

As a fellow muslim, this bullshittery does not impress nor suprise me. The racefail regarding us is pretty huge in the US. Stupid, but true.

I MEAN OF COURSE ALL MUSLIMS CRASH PLANES TO BUILDINGS AND CARRY BOMBS AND WAVING GUNS AND CONSPIRING TO KILL AND TERRORIZE ALL THOSE ~WHITE~ PEOPLE! Wait, they're not? BLASPHEMY!

Seriously, world. Besides our ~religion~, in which the majority of you have the Complaining About Religion You Neither Understand Or Believe attitude towards it, we're normal people. Normal, functional, people. Well, there are those extremist who totally misinterpret Islam's principle of 'Don't hurt all of God's creations'. But yeah. Normal!

(The conservative Muslim inside me does wonder if it's appropriate for her to dress in bikinis and stuff for the pageant, but to each their own)

Yeeeah. I wish people could do some reading up on the damn subject before they started accusing everyone who is Muslim of supporting the terrorists or being insane killers. And accusing everyone who looks like they could be Muslim of being Muslim. When they're actually Hindu or Christian or Jewish or even atheist. Because people are freaking STUPID and skin color does not equal religion...but I'm rambling.

Suffice to say, this shit is bananas.

That said, the bikinis and stuff should serve as proof to anyone that Rima is NOT a conservative Muslim and especially not a fundamentalist crazy. But that's...for sane people to deduce, and not whoever makes those articles.

This. It's like saying every Arabian and/or lives in the Middle Eastern is Muslim. That their culture = Islamic culture. It's wrong on so many levels.

That said, the bikinis and stuff should serve as proof to anyone that Rima is NOT a conservative Muslim and especially not a fundamentalist crazy.

Exactly! I was expecting a protest from the Islamic side about this, actually. Which made more sense than these bananas.

I honestly expected a protest from the Islamic side, too. Which...wow. Absolutely nothing so far? Kind of ironic, that these good, conservative Americans are showing themselves to be more ignorant and prejudiced than the people they're accusing of terrorism. Way to be, dumbasses.

OMGGGGGG, SHE'S ~BROWN~ WHICH ~OBVIOUSLY~ MEANS SHE'S NOT AMURIKAN!! HOW DARE SHE WIN A BEAUTY PAGEANT! SHE MUST BE PLANNING ON TAKING IT OVER FOR HER TERRORIST CELL'S NEFARIOUS DEEDS.

Oh god, that hurt to type. D:

WHY does this bullshit have to pop up shortly after discovering The 99? I WANT TO REVEL IN MY FINDING OF AWESOME MUSLIM HEROES AND THE CONSERVATARDS ARE DRIVING ME UP THE WALL AGAIN. FML FML FML FML FML. *bangs head against the wall*

I swear, whenever the TV series hits the US, I can already hear the "MOOSLIM PROPAGANDA" calls. -.-;

EDIT: I CAN GRAMMAR. :V

This is seriously the next (and I cringe while typing this) 'Yellow Terror' scare, isn't it? Everything and everyone Muslim must be a horrible, horrible person with planes and bombs and an evil agenda. You know it couldn't possibly be anything else. It's not like Muslims haven't been around for ages, even in this country. No, clearly they were biding their time, waiting to strike.

I swear to god, if I actually meet some in real life and that say 'Muslim propaganda' about something stupid, I will cold clock them in the jaw without thinking. It'll just be pure reflex.

Muslims aren't a race.

Neither are Arabs if you want to get into it but that just brings up the whole can of worms of race as a stupid and arbitrary social construct and what do you mean Arabs are caucasian whaaaaat?

Not that I'd try to pretend for a second that this backlash isn't motivated by racist ideas and xenophobia liek whoa. Because to lots of Americans, "Muslim" = "Brown person from a west asian nation."

If nobody ever pays attention to anything a troll like Debbie Schlussel has to say again, it'll be too soon.

Right. Honestly I think, although they're choosing her religion to harp on, it's largely motivated by racial issues. So I used 'racist'. But you're right, I should have clarified around there somewhere about the 'Muslim =/= Middle Eastern/dark-skinned people who look a certain way' crowbar of separation.

(Oh, man, Arabs. I know an Iranian who eye-twitches about that word, for good reason. She keeps being referred to as such, when...yeah.)

Debbie Schlussel makes me think of Ann Coulter. Only even more so. She's like purified essence of Coulter.

Considering all the replies to Debbie's page, it looks like she gets all her readership from enraged "look how stupid this is" linking. Bet she makes a killing off of ad revenue. That's how it works ( ... )

It's pretty much the same eye twitch I develop when people say Puerto Ricans and Mexicans are exactly the same.

Predictions: A black Muslim would have the double trouble of 'black women aren't attractive' PLUS 'Muslims are out to kill us all', an east Asian might have gotten off easier due to the fetishization of Asians in general, with the Muslim thing confusing people. The white Muslim woman? She could be seen as confused and brainwashed by that nasty brown religion, or a skin-color traitor.

I think these people coming up with "TERRORIST AGENDA" ideas have seen Miss Congeniality one too many times and need to stop watching the O'Reilly Factor. (Because, honestly, what the fuck?)

I LIKED Miss Congeniality. T_T These people need to step off of that movie and get their own gig. Hopefully one far away from the rest of us.

The O'Reilly factor needs to stop being AIRED, let alone stop pretending to be a fair and unbiased report of anything. Guh.
