conversation has just left me heathen

I probably shouldn't use fandom_secrets as a judgement for most of humanity, but every now and then it pops up with something that hits too close to home. Basically, someone lamented about the lack of asexual representation in LGBT fest, and the sense of being left out from the queer community- something I have personally thought about myself. This is exactly why I cannot read anything at that comm. Besides the actual secrets. The comments are always mean and hurtful and not understanding and OMG really?

:offers you internet hugs: the general public sucks hardcore. I'm sorry :(

I mean, at least with racefail, a lot of comments can be supportive. When someone bashes homosexuality, the comments are obviously indicative that most people think this is a no go. But asexuality might as well be a 'fad', with the respect people give it. I've run into this behavior IRL, so this sort of disregard really hits close to home.

*hugs* I would just think some people would know better, since they've been discriminated, too.

...is it bad that I never would have thought of sticking asexuality under the GLBT umbrella? Though, now that I've read this, it kind of makes sense.

And WTF are people thinking with those comments???! Why would you even-- guhhh. The stupid. It hurts. D:

Asexuality can align itself with het, but it's still completely different. That might be a source of confusion, as well as the inability for people with a libido to contemplate happily and healthily living without the sex drive. I do think asexuality should be placed in that umbrella, since we're just as queer as they are. This isn't the oppression olympics!

The stupid really does hurt, in this case.

Wow, never realized what a bastion of FAIL fs was...I guess cuz I usually just read the secrets. Fuck those tools. (I'd love to say that it's the anonymity that makes people into raging dicks like that, but sadly my experience with LJ tells me that is just not true.)

Fandom_secrets is usually overwhelmingly racefail, but this recent sexualityfail gave me pause, since the comments about bisexuality/homosexuality are usually supportive. I wasn't expecting this from an 'openminded' fanbase.

But yeah, being interrogated about asexuality by four people at a party and earlier by some dude who was trying to convince me that I was traumatized has given me the personal experience to realize that just plain ignorance turns people into raging dicks.

GDI, I HATE when asexuality comes up as a topic on F!S because the fail that goes on is ten million times worse than race or genderfail. >_<;

It's like a thousand frozen haddock slapping me in the face in swift succession. And then the snow weasels come. >8O

And yeah, internet people have some modicum knowledge about gender and race and homosexuality, so when asexuality shows up and everyone turns into a paper-chewing walleyed imbecile, I turn violent with frustration.

It really is sad, too. It's like, we've come so far in many subjects, yet asexuality is still treated like crap. Very frustrating, even to those of us (like me) who aren't asexual but do our best to sympathize. :/

It's always reassuring to me to find non-asexuals who are aware of asexuality and treat is as valid and worthy of respect. <3
