he doesn't look a thing like jesus

Damn it, Kishimoto has to insert just enough badass!Sakura to make me actually want to sit up and pay attention to the current story arc. Sadly, I am 99.9% certain that it's going to end in a cockblock, especially since Sai just told Jesus what Sakura's going to do. But seriously, Sakura haring off to go kill Sasuke on her own is my favorite, ( Read more... )

Your post is epic word.

He doesn't actually have to make hard decisions or sacrifice much for his goals. Yes. Strangely, it's the same thing that turned me off on Aang. I'm not saying that the boy hasn't been through a hard time, but as far as life goals go, he practically glides through things. He learns with insane ease, and every time the ninja world shows him its dark, ugly underbelly, he doesn't get his hands dirty.

This, right here, is exactly it. He never has to make the hard choice and even when Gaara is shoving it in his face (Sasuke or being Hokage, pick one) you KNOW he is going to get a lionturtle free pass on having to make that choice.

I hate that lionturtle clause. With a passion. It just makes the 'hero' look like a spoiled kid who gets his way all the time, no matter how much the narrator insists otherwise.

I think the narrator insisting otherwise just makes the hero look even MORE like a spoiled kid, personally.

Oh, yes. It gives me that added heap of resentfulness, because then it's just the author being a jerk and attempting to force this view of the character on me. Sometimes it even happens to the point where they dumb down and weaken the other characters for the sake of deifying the hero, and I just. Start throwing things.

Well, you've pinpointed the reason I wasn't a big fan of Aang, but could never put my finger on. Although learning things way too easily was sort of a problem with the series a lot(as much as I love Sokka, no, you can't learn sword-fighting in a week).

Oh, god, the swords and Sokka >_< I don't think they did a bad job with Katara and Zuko's learning process, which made realistic progress through three seasons, and Toph was a master once she arrived on the scene, but Sokka's swordbending drove me up a wall. I barely accepted it on the idea that he might have had some natural ability combined with weapons knowledge before- but yeah, even then, that was ridiculous.

That and making a sword from a space rock. WTF NO. That episode was so very, very weird. I think it was made because they felt bad for Sokka not having any bending powers and people might think him useless comic relief(which is a dumb idea), because that episode was nothing but HAY GUYS LOOK AT ALL THE STUFF SOKKA CAN DO OMG.

*lol* Sword from space rock. I was actually okay with that because I made the assumption that they'd found a metalline meteorite (siderite), and that there's actually a long mythological history behind forging swords from 'sky stones' that goes with the overall mythic feeling of the show. In real life, a man named James Sowerby forged a sword from a meteorite and gave it to the Czar, so it is possible.

But yeah, I think they really dropped the ball on that. They needed to be slowly building Sokka's abilties up, not slamming it all in our faces in one episode. I heard that they had a different writing team for third season, which would explain the poorer pacing and the odd dialogue choices occasionally.
