I find that I can't stand cruelty in romance. I would have said violence, but that would be a lie. I like stories about couples who fight together and even with each other, and who use the violence as a sort of bloody foreplay- but it has to be two equal partners, both getting blows in, both enjoying it, and it has to be the right sort of moment. Oy, I agree. I hate the "I'm going to berate you til you sleep with me" chemistry that seems to be so popular. Like people assume that a strong woman secretly wants to be itemized and victimized. Ugh.

And WTF with the women beating men too? Apparently that's the way to make men softer and more appealing? I'm so confused.

I also agree about the equal violence foreplay though, especially verbally, or something that would normally be seen as fairly soft violence. Arguments that culminate to a well-timed shove and then passionate love are the best EVER.

Okay, to clarify: all of what I am complaining about is one-sided in that BOTH sides are not okay with what is going on. It is clearly all about one person getting off and dominating and the other person being a victim. Which...I hate. So...yes. There's kink, and then there's this.
