Christmas Rose: "Relieve my anxiety." Sunflower: Lofty and wise thoughts, haughtiness. Dill: Lust. Thrift: Sympathy. Valerian: An accommadating disposition, facility. Water Willow: Freedom. Fennel: Force, strength, 'deserving all praise.' Spiderwort: Esteem, but not love. Straw, whole: Agreement, united, a contract kept.
But the point of fanfiction isn't to 'fix' the canon so much as it is to explore what it gives us and enjoy writing the characters and world.
It's interesting to hear you say this, because my experience has been so different. The first time I got inspired enough to actually, physically type out fanfic (as opposed to having it just be in my head) was whine I wanted to fix an aspect of the canon. As I've grown, I've noted that I DO write fanfic when I want to fix something - whether that a romantic relationship I would like to see or a character who needs more love. The shows that feel more 'complete' to me, such as Firefly and Leverage and Neon Genesis Evangelion, I don't feel the need for fanfic.
Iron would be a very cool character to hang out with and I'm glad that the girl's homelife is looking a little better.
Bamboo: Strength, loyalty, steadfastness, resilient. (In Chinese culture, this represents the aspects of a true gentleman with perfect virtues. Just as an amusing note.) Daffodil: Desire, affection, regard, unrequited love. Nasturtium: Conquest, victory in battle, patriotism. Zinnia: Thinking of an absent friend. Columbine, purple: Resolved to win. Rose leaf: "You may hope." Cherry blossom: 'Sakura', in Japanese. Lack of permanence, a warrior's brave life, transience. In Chinese, strength, power, female dominance, feminine beauty. Tulip, yellow: Symbol for cheerful thoughts, sunshine, "There is sunshine in your smile." Also means hopeless love, love that has no chance. Violet, blue: Watchfulness, faithfulness, "I'll always be true."
I feel like exploration is the bigger factor, really: like, if I fill out an unexplored canon character, it's because they're not shown much and they're like a blank slate. I feel like I'm fleshing out and discovering more than I'm trying to 'fix' it, which is why the really complete shows are hard to write fic for: they're so compact and everything's already been said.

OH GOD IRUKA/ANKO MAN I DON'T EVEN KNOW THESE CHARACTERS THAT WELL. XD

Stock: Lasting beauty, bonds of affection, promptness, "you'll always be beautiful to me", happy life. Alyssum: "Worth beyond beauty." Rose, coral: Desire. Flos, Adonis: Painful recollections. Gladiolus: Inner strength, self-confidence, 'ready armed'. Crocus: "Abuse me not," gladness. Hyacinth: Constancy, games, play. Camellia, red: Excellence, intrinsic worth, "You're a flame in my heart."
