An Observation...

Personal responsibility is just that - personal. You create your own future based upon the decisions you make, as well as the decisions you decline to make. Of course, to a lesser degree, your future is also determined by decisions made by others on your behalf. Rather than bemoan the options that you don't have, work with relish upon the options ( Read more... )

To some extent, yup. ;-)

I realize, of course, that not all choices are available, but for the ones that are, we should be bold enough to make them.

Carpe Diem and all that jazz.. Yeah, well I am where I am now because I did just that. And now I sit and ponder leaving that all behind for other things.. Like joining someone like Robin Romano in the Ivory Coast..

Who knows.. but yeah, you have to do something to make it happen..

Exactly right. ;-)

May I ask what part of Africa were you in? I'd love to hear some adventures from your time there. As for moi, I have no immediate desire to go there, but maybe in time, I might have a change of heart.

I wrote a post that I was proud of once about a similar situation in India. It was offensive in some ways, but I believe it was right. My argument was that the problem with the American poor was that they were too rich. Now, obviously, that is an obnoxious way to talk about a serious problem (and I certainly got attention from it!). But my inspiration was a story of a former slave woman in India who was giving her meager savings and what time she could spare to a local school. Especially in India, she was way right that this was the key to any chance for her children and children like them. There is a lot we all do not appreciate. I have my "do you know that there are starving children in Africa" moments when people start talking about nonsense; I just interject that. People are like, "huh?" And I need it, too. God forbid I miss my weekly dose of drama or buy this or that thing I'll never use, but will my tax return really show the charitable donations I'd like it to? Not so sure . . .
