Perhaps it wasn’t the most conventional way to end a first date, but it was fitting for them. Lying in the middle of the Panthers stadium on a blanket from the back of Jason’s truck staring up at the stars in the clear Dillon sky. It was a chilly night, so they were rugged up in coats, but the cold air was the last thing on their minds. He had his arm wrapped securely around her and she was lying in against him with her head resting on his shoulder. She had foregone the sling for the night, assuring him she would be okay if she just took it easy, which worked, considering he really hadn’t been planning any impromptu bungee jumping after dessert.
Despite his panic with Sam the night before, he had bitten the bullet and decided that if he was going to take Taylor on a date, he was going to do it all right. He had bought her flowers - pink tulips and white roses - and when he had dropped by the pharmacy to see his Dad at work, he spotted a small bear with a yellow number six embroidered onto it’s stomach. His Dad admitted to getting them in on a whim as a shout-out to his son’s old Panthers position, but Jason just laughed fondly and made some gag about his father becoming sentimental in his old age. He bought one, though, and gave it to Taylor with the flowers. Thankfully she hadn’t thought he was a geek and loved the gifts, offering one of her own to him in return - a keychain with a tiny set of silver handcuffs. It was sweet and they were now housed securely on his truck keys. It had set the scene for what Jason could only describe as a perfect date.
The meal had been great and they shared a dessert of chocolate cake and ice cream. They talked a lot about their school days and then inevitably turned to some hushed chatting about Jason’s accident and the months that followed it. She told him about her time in the Police Academy and how lucky she was to score a position in the precinct she did because she loved her beat, despite what happened to her. She told him some of her favourite things about New York and he admitted to finding the place overwhelming on his own. They ended up back at the Panthers stadium when Jason admitted he was reluctant for the night to end and Taylor had freely agreed the sentiments.
They eased out of yet another lingering kiss and Jason smiled, rubbing his palm softly up and down her arm. “I should get you home soon. I don’t want your Dad to kill me for keeping his little girl out past her bedtime,” he teased, eyes returning to the patches of stars overhead.
Taylor snorted against his shoulder. “Dad wanted to hug ya for takin’ me out on a date. Ya could bring me home next week and he would just ask how dessert was,” she laughed. “But it’s been real nice, QB. Thank you. I haven’t had as good a time like this in ages. I don’t really want it to end.”
“It doesn’t have to,” Jason told her quietly and the slight uncertainty was evident in his tone. “My parents are in Austin for the weekend visiting my aunt, so I’ve got the place to myself. You can come back there if you like. Spend the night. I mean, you don’t have to, but if you want to…”
Taylor shifted, rising up on her good arm so she could look down at him and see his eyes. She smiled, using her other hand to rub his chest in slow strokes. “Are we just talkin’ a sleepover, or more?” she asked teasingly.
“More…” Jason murmured and lifted his head so his lips could meet hers again. They shared another soft kiss and he sunk back down against the blanket, but held her gaze. “You’re pretty amazing, you know that? I’d be crazy not to want more. But I don’t want to push you or pressure you. If you don’t want to, I won’t take offense in any way.”
Taylor smiled again. “You ain’t pushin’, darlin’. You certainly ain’t pressurin’ me. Truth is, I’ve kinda wanted ya ass for a long time. I just wasn’t about to waltz up to ya in high school and admit I was crushin’ on ya. Me and half the rest of the chicks my age. Ya were a star! Most popular guy in school. I admired ya from afar,” she admitted sheepishly.
“Oh right. Sure,” Jason laughed, assuming she was joking. “You always seemed to know exactly what you wanted. Why would you be crushing on the school jock?” He smirked and reached up to gently tug on one of her blonde curls. “But thank you for the ego boost.”
“I ain’t jokin’, darlin’,” Taylor laughed softly, that telltale blush creeping back into her cheeks. “But I wasn’t crushin’ on a school jock. I was crushin’ on Jason Street. The guy who could never quite get his head around the table of elements and just happened t’be a fantastic football player. But ya well off limits. I didn’t ever expect it t’be more than a schoolgirl crush. Then ya got hurt and left school. You and I ain’t ever spoke again much after that. I just heard ‘bout ya through the grapevine and what not. Sam and I stayed in touch, sharin’ a few emails now and again when I went east, but I certainly didn’t expect t’see ya in Dillon when I came back here. Ya really were a sight for sore eyes in the supermarket.”
Jason watched her face as he listened to her closely. His forehead had creased a little in awe at her confession. “You’re serious,” he realised and touched her cheek. “I’m sorry I never noticed. I mean… yeah, I was a different person back then. Sure you’re still interested? That Jason Street’s long gone.”
Taylor shook her head. “No, the jock is long gone, sweetheart. That Jason Street is still right here, right now, and I’m more than sure I’m still interested. Much to my shock, my heart still skipped a beat when I saw you the other day. You ain’t lost your touch, QB. So, if ya want to go back to your place for more… I’m more than willin’ t’share that with ya. If ya want me, because there ain’t no doubt that I want you, even just once.”
Jason just smiled and answered by gently pulling her down against him in another kiss, his tongue seeking out hers and more than telling her that there was nothing one-sided about the crush anymore and tonight was definitely not just going to be a sleepover.
