"Never forget that everything Hitler did in Germany was legal." -Martin Luther King, Jr.

Do you know what's going on? Have you heard what [Hitler] is doing here?

If the answer is no or even well... kind of, I offer you a link to our Library of Congress ( Read more... )

The government's success is DEPENDENT upon your ignorance and indifference about the world around you.

I don't believe I agree with that statement.

I just don't think "the government" is an independent entity with an agenda that is advantaged by ignorance. "The government" is informed by and comprised of people. Now I admit, at present that might not be ALL people, but it is definitely informed by some - many people support this legislation, as I am sure you are aware. I just don't think it is fair to characterize the situation as a "government" versus "people" scenario. The government is just the medium through which groups of people arbitrate their ideas, etc.

In responding to Kate, you used the term "flash criminalize," and I think I take issue with that also. First of all, any time a law is passed, the people who are currently breaking that law immediately become criminals. It isn't normally a gradual process. Second, the illegal immigrants in question (and their employers too I suspect) are already breaking existing law. Yes this bill increases the penalties involved, but I can't say I am opposed to that necessarily. Maybe there is a reason I should be that you can point ( ... )

Forgive my ignorance and naivety, and maybe it's because I was born here or something, but I just don't see the outrage there. Now normally, I'm one of the first ones to scrutinize the government and find all the loopholes in just how badly they're about to royally screw the american people, but those propositions that were built into that law were based off of European laws that have existed for several years and have been quite successful. (Ex. England's been using police force to patrol for illegals and has been detaining them in cohersion with France since mid-2004 ( ... )

I do forgive your ignorance, though I don't think you're being ignorant about illegal immigration. You seem to have not read my post.

If you read the bill (or a summary), you'll understand that it makes felons of a lot of people. It flash-criminalizes migrant workers and those who employ them in a way that will only create huger problems.

I said nothing in my post about amnesty, nor do I believe that non-citizens should vote. I refrained from all propaganda except the MLK, Jr quotation. I personally am only beginning to form in my mind what I think we should do about the fact that immigrants are willing to take jobs at lowers wages and how this makes our poor citizenry even poorer. HR 4437 is not the answer, of that I am absolutely certain. What I hoped to accomplish was to get people to pay attention to the travesty our government is calling a quick solution to a huge problem ( ... )

Cool, but I still don't understand why you perceive the bill as a "travesty". Yes, it criminalizes illegal aliens and those who encourage them through employment or any other resource. The same would be true in just about every other country...so that's the part I'm missing. How and why is that a travesty?
