It's the act of simultaneously believing two opposing ideas to be true. This is a bad example, probably, but believing that theft is wrong and at the same time believing that if a person has no choices left, stealing is a viable option could be considered a form of doublethink.

It's been about 20 years since I read it but I'm pretty sure that's a concept from the novel, 1984. Have you read it?
