It's the act of simultaneously believing two opposing ideas to be true. This is a bad example, probably, but believing that theft is wrong and at the same time believing that if a person has no choices left, stealing is a viable option could be considered a form of doublethink.
I wish I could make it simpler for you, but the fact is, that's the world. For almost everything we believe to be either absolutely good or absolutely bad, there's caveat. It is confusing, and it's hard to look at the world that way, but it's worth it. You see a lot more when you're not trying to judge everything you look at.
