and I think, while the scenes aren't massively deep or wordy, they work just fine with the amount of info given- it's supposed to be a broad brush stroke piece and works wonderfully that way

I like my broad brush strokes but I also really do think I'd kind of like to fill in the gaps, you know? (I don't feel like that nearly often enough *g*)

Hey, look at you! Two thousand words! (Exactly! Cool.)

I really like the pictures this all paints in my mind: Nine, maybe fresh from the Time War, and the TARDIS seeking out another beloved ship, two scarred men understanding each other, and especially Kaylee getting her hands grubby in the TARDIS. :) (I love her up on the beam on the wall!)

Neat. I'm so glad you did this!

I haven't done much Firefly browsing and didn't realize fandom used phonetic spellings for the Chinese. It seems really strange to me, since there is actually an official Romanized version of Mandarin, pinyin. "Sheh sheh" is spelled xie xie for instance. I wonder if it goes back to the cast needing to have an idea how to pronounce the Chinese? /irrelevant babbling

and the TARDIS seeking out another beloved ship,
Yes :D the name alone had the TARDIS zeroing in I reckon but that Serenity is so much loved was definitely the clincher :D And she'd love Kaylee to bits!

I've only done a limited amount of reading myself so I don't know what would be aceptable on a Firefly fanfic page. But it seemed logical to me to write the Chinese in a way the readers would most readily understand - I know enough - very random - knowledge myself to have made a stab at xei xei being pronounced - wait while I organise my logic - soft ch followed by ay if I'd come across it in someone else's fic, but I also know that not everyone else knows what I know./// *stops rambling*

Awwwww, Kaylee would make a great companion for a Doctor and I agree, the TARDIS would love her. I'd just hate for Mal to lose her!

With the Chinese, it's probably just me. I noticed on the reference site you used, the site's author used phonetic spellings as well as pinyin in her dictionary. Xie xie (i before e) would be tough to pronounce, coming from an English speaking perspective. You're right, the closest we have to the "x" is a "sh" but it's not that exactly, more of a flat-tongued hiss. The vowel is more of a "yeh" - like "shyeh shyeh". ::shrug::

Though (musing as I type) I wonder how important it is for readers to be able to pronounce foreign words in a story? Maybe it's an individual thing. I tend to skip the words I don't know and work from context, but for some people that might be distracting. I don't think there's a right or wrong way to do it, and I didn't mean anything about your fic! It's just interesting to think about.

I think... um, I am okay if I have no idea how to *actually* pronounce words in foreign languages as long as I can take a stab at them. So I think that would involve writing phonetically (if acceptable) rather than simply romanizing non-Western/European alphabets.
