Awareness is slow in coming. Maybe it's the seagulls that first rouse you. Maybe it's the sound of the waves. Maybe it's the gentle lap of warm salt water at your feet and ankles ( Read more... )

[ Sally, unaware that the Cycle is now recording on voice mode, scrambles to her feet and goes to grab her communication device. ]

Wait! No! That can't really be all you're going to tell me. Come back!

[ There's a long pause and no response from Autumn. ]

... Bugger.

[Jack is staring rather blankly at the very queer instrument in his hand. Autumn had patiently explained the thing to him, but as much as he thought he understood, he's still very confused.]

Blast it.

[He looks around, squinting through the fog, trying to see any form of human - English - life. There is no one. Swearing, he fumbles with the - what was it called? - Cycle.

Like a letter, she said. Just press the thing and talk like you would in a letter.

[He presses Voice and hopes for the best. The Cycle crackles, and he clears his throat.]

Ahem. Eh...To Whom It May Concern: My name is Jack Aubrey, and I am the captain of the HMS Surprise. As I am a fellow stranded traveler, I eagerly await your response so that we might begin planning our survival and coexistence. Your response is eagerly awaited. Eagerly. Sincerely, Captain Aubrey.

Are you writing a letter or leaving a voicemail?

[ There's a small sigh and the Londoner begins again. ]

I'm Sally Sparrow, Mr. Aubrey. I'm guessing you're one of the others the woman talked about? Travelers, I think she called us.

[Aubrey jumps nearly a foot in the air when the Cycle crackles again and speaks to him in a female voice. He has to collect his breath for a moment, but then he grabs the object from the sandy grass and presses the Voice button again, mind reeling.]

Hello? Hello? I demand to know what in blazes a - a Voice Mail is. Ma'am.

[He breathes deeply.]

My apologies, Miss Sparrow. Eh, indeed, I am one of the travelers. Am I to expect the same of yourself?

It's a recorded message left for someone on their telephone... and you probably don't know what a telephone is.

[ There's a bit of muttering that's unclear, but Sally doesn't sound happy. ]

Yes, I think it's safe to assume I'm a Traveler as well. This certainly isn't London.

[Lucas squints as he looks out over the water. The largest body of water he'd ever seen before was simply a small lake. He wishes for a moment that he could enjoy the new experience, but at the moment? He simply couldn't. He was not at home or in a forest and his hawk was not in the sky above. It wasn't like Red to stray far. This wasn't right.]

Hn.

[He looks to the odd device Autumn had explained to him. He thinks he understand how it works, though he's never seen anything like it before. This was far too many new experiences for one day. He presses the voice button.]

's it workin' right? Y'all out there like she said y'are?

What? What in the devil are you saying, man? Speak up! You sound like a Yankee. Or is it this blasted piece of devilry that is fucking everything up -

[There is quite a bit of static and thudding sounds as Jack apparently whacks the Cycle on the ground.]

There. Speak again, my good man.

Ah, good t'know we're not alone yeah? Where y' at out here?

[He pauses a moment. He isn't sure what the word 'Yankee' means and whether or not it's an insult.]

...th' heck's a Yankee?

[Jack is a bit wary of revealing his exact location, but he acquiesces, to a point.]

I'm situated near a small rise in the land. What are your coordinates?

...Never you mind, my good lad. I'm afraid I never quite caught your name.

[The girl's voice is soft at first, like she's speaking to herself, although there is a certain kind of a tremble in it that seems to suggest that she is trying hard to pretend that she isn't a little worried.

Oh, alright, scared.]

At least it's not a cell phone... Gods where is this? It can't be Circe's island again, there aren't any boats. And no guinea pigs, either.

[Eventually her voice picks up a little, although that only makes the tremble more noticable.]

Alright. First thing's first. Find out where this is. She said something about a city, that's probably the best place to start...

Actually, there are a few of us that have made contact already. We're all heading for a patch of trees a little ways from the shoreline. It may be a bit of a walk, depending on where you are. I had to walk a little ways before I could see it.

... 's a little overwhelming, isn't it? All this. Have to say though, I'm glad there's another girl around.
