Awareness is slow in coming. Maybe it's the seagulls that first rouse you. Maybe it's the sound of the waves. Maybe it's the gentle lap of warm salt water at your feet and ankles ( Read more... )

[Lucas squints as he looks out over the water. The largest body of water he'd ever seen before was simply a small lake. He wishes for a moment that he could enjoy the new experience, but at the moment? He simply couldn't. He was not at home or in a forest and his hawk was not in the sky above. It wasn't like Red to stray far. This wasn't right.]

Hn.

[He looks to the odd device Autumn had explained to him. He thinks he understand how it works, though he's never seen anything like it before. This was far too many new experiences for one day. He presses the voice button.]

's it workin' right? Y'all out there like she said y'are?

What? What in the devil are you saying, man? Speak up! You sound like a Yankee. Or is it this blasted piece of devilry that is fucking everything up -

[There is quite a bit of static and thudding sounds as Jack apparently whacks the Cycle on the ground.]

There. Speak again, my good man.

Ah, good t'know we're not alone yeah? Where y' at out here?

[He pauses a moment. He isn't sure what the word 'Yankee' means and whether or not it's an insult.]

...th' heck's a Yankee?

[Jack is a bit wary of revealing his exact location, but he acquiesces, to a point.]

I'm situated near a small rise in the land. What are your coordinates?

...Never you mind, my good lad. I'm afraid I never quite caught your name.

Lucas. Well, Lucas, I am Captain Jack Aubrey of the HMS Surprise. You may call me 'Captain' or 'sir.' Either one.

I can see a rather large stand of green trees in the west. Oblige me and look around for it. Do you see it?

wha's wrong 'bout callin' ya by yer name? Ain't like I toldja t' call me...

[awkward pause goes here]

...right, so I ain't gotta nice title, but y' get th' point, y'know?

[Lucas makes a few hmming noises as he looks for the trees. Ah-ha.]

Yeah. T' th' east o' me. On m' way now.

Y'see any fish in th' water? We's gonna need t' eat somethin'.

You are quite clearly not a naval man. But no matter - I suppose I must accustom myself to being called 'Aubrey.'

Very well. I'll meet you at the ocean side of the trees, and I shall be on the lookout for any game I might shoot. Man cannot live on fish alone.

Nope. 'm a scout. Guardian o' th' forest 'n all that.

Right, see y' there, Aubrey.

[When Lucas arrives at the trees, he starts looking around for a face to match the voice he's been talking to.]

[Jack has arrived a moment hence, and is just starting to skin a rather bony squirrel while whistling a jaunty version of The Lincolnshire Poacher.

[Was that Aubrey? Lucas had no way of being sure at the moment and so he approaches slowly and quietly. Considering that there was no one else around and he does not look like a Sally, he decides to announce his presence...not that he's not ready to snap this guy's neck if he shows the first sign of hostility.]

Well, y'ain't gonna get a lotta meat off o' that.

[Jack had not heard the boy's approach, but he doesn't show his alarm - slowly, he sets aside the squirrel and stands up, knife held loosely but his other hand ready to grab his pistol at the boy's first sudden move.]

Lucas, I presume?

[Lucas crouched defensively as he saw him point the knife in his direction. He could knock it out easily, he held it so loose. But the voice matches.]

Yer Aubrey, 'm guessin'?

Indeed, I am.

[Wiping his knife and putting it away, Jack adjusts his cravat and overcoat, despite the fact that the splendor of his captain's raiment has been a little tempered by the sand and sleeping in it.]

Good t' actually meet ya then.

[Lucas relaxes and rolls his right shoulder back. When he sees Aubrey adjust his appearance, he looks down at himself a bit. His light leather armor looks fine, undamaged except for a few bits of wet sand sticking to it. He brushes that off a bit. He looks back to the captain with a smile. Aubrey might notice that the irises of Lucas' eyes are purple and have a faint glow.]

All y'find 're squirrels?

Aye - though I didn't look all too carefully.

[Jack eyes the younger man. What a getup!]

Er...you are wearing quite the costume, son.
