Cape #1, late 19th century

A cape in black silk, covered with net. The net is dark brown now, but I think it was black originally. The net has appliques made of black felt, outlined in a narrow braid. The hem has a ruffle. The edges are trimmed with very thin transparent silk, pleated.

The cape is beautiful, and so ornate - so much work. Probably 1890's, ro go over slightly puffy sleeves.

My grandmother used to say that the owner wore these clothes when she visited the court. I don't know if that is true- though she was certainly wealthy, but I can well imagine that they would have fitted very well for such visits, because of all the work that has been put to them.

Thank you for the date!

They are. I've been thinking of doing this for years, becasue they really can't be unpacked every time I want to see them, so I haven't looked at them for at least 15 years. One day I'll do this without kids around, though, and look them over more carefully.

Time to get them out again I think ;) Leave the bored son at home and beg borrow or steal a tripod if you haven't got one. I'm a sucker for construction close up shots...
