It is worth noting that the LJ TOS (XII and XVI, 17) says you aren't to "obscure" ads or "Employ tactics to prevent the full and complete display of advertisements"--it doesn't say specifically that this is in relation to Plus account stuff, but I don't know what else it really would be in reference to. My totally knee-jerk reaction is that LJ had promised us that they wouldn't put ads on the site - and so in some way they violated our understood TOS. But actually, I had no idea this was specifically in their TOS, since I have a paid account and don't see ads anyway. I'll link down to your comment, anyway.

i would think that that relates more to the plus users not being allowed to cover up the ads in their own journals, ie by hacking some journal style which hides the ad area from viewing.

Actually, they can't tell whether you're using an ad-blocker or not, and they don't really care (though they'd prefer if people didn't share tips on news post :P). What you aren't to do, though, is block the ads on your Plus LJ using CSS or whatever, so that they're blocked for everyone.
