Yesterday I wrote two ficlets for oxoniensis's Porn Battle:

The Rennie Method | RPF (*hides*), Joe Flanigan/Callum Keith Rennie, 683 words, prompt: easy.
Lethe | SGA, John/Rodney, 557 words, prompt: elliptical ( Read more... )

Heh, I know what you mean. I wrote this one story called "Heat" where the guys never actually touched. I wanted to see how sexy I could get it without an actual touch, and it's all wanting and yearning and not-quite-touching. It worked out pretty well.

I copied down a few of the prompts from the porn battle too, but I'm not sure if I'm going to be able to manage anything, at least anything under the length limit. [flail] Pwips bore me and I need context too -- at least something that pretends to be a plot. There were some interesting prompts but they might end up too long. I can just see myself after however long, wandering the back alleys of fandom with my orphan stories in a little red wagon, looking for homes for them. [emo sigh]

Oh, I'm sure that if you write actual stories based on any of the prompts, people in those fandoms will happily read them!

Doggy! :D

If I do write actual stories for any of them I'll come tap you on the shoulder for advice on where to share them. I don't know any of the non-RPS communities, or even what the etiquette is. [laugh/flail]

I think it's partly because I don't have an OTP view; I don't accept a priori that John and Rodney (or Fraser and Ray, or Harry and Snape) are, in fact, doing it, so I need a little context - any context - to convince myself.

That's exactly how I am, too. And I'm a lot more likely to be convinced by good characterization and voices and a plot that feels like it came out of canon than a PWP, no matter how hot the sex or great the prose.

Oh, yes. I think I'm far more attuned to plot, actually, because even if the voices are right, a PWP setting doesn't give much room for characterization. Setting and plot ground the characters for me and make the difference between a random brilliant guy who talks a lot, and Rodney.

I thought that JF/CKR was the hottest thing I've read in ages & I was absolutely unable to put into words why, but you've just explained it all above. So if I just quote your whole post back at you, would that count as detailed feedback? ;)

Seriously, though, the tension you set up between them was so intense it sizzled. The dynamic was so well-expressed that it definitely wasn't Any Two Guys; it was *these* Two Guys - and I hardly even know who CKR is!

Ooh, thank you very much! And yeah, tension, that's it exactly: that's what I strive to achieve, and that's what I need to have in the stories I read for them to work for me.

Yeah, I feel the same way. PWP hardly ever works for me. Sex should complement or add to the story, not be the story. I mean, it works sometimes if, as you mentioned, there're emotions and feelings involved, but that's a tricky thing to get right.

Oh, I like stories that are all about the sex - well, some of them - but there has to be context; there has to be a story there, not just people fucking. And it absolutely has to be about the emotions for me for it to be hot. On the other hand, my favorite stories are medium-long plotty things that also have sex, where the sex flows organically out of the plot. (That complements or adds to it, basically, just what you say.)
