:D Stand alone issues? Hmm... A favorite of mine is Captain America: 65th Anniversary Special - it's a flashback double-issue and a nice introduction to some of the core characters. If you don't mind spoilers for earlier issues: Winter Soldier, Winter Kills is a fantastic Bucky character piece and one of my favorites. They're both by Ed Brubaker with pencils by Marcos Martin and Lee Weeks respectively.

Fabian Nicieza and Kevin Maguire's four-issue origin retelling is very accessible to newcomers (it's what I read first) and is in a torrent file. Most of Brubaker's Cap is hard to recommend by individual issues as the plot carries well from the beginning to end... terra uploaded the first arc ("Winter Soldier") in a zip file.

As for the Avengers and Young Avengers: Young Avengers Special #1 is a double-issue by Alan Heinberg and various artists. It tells the origins of the team members; I found several of them rather moving. Things, some of which are relevant, some not so much:

1) I didn't leave the store tonight till 9:30 because I was so busy talking with The Most Adorable Fanboy in the World aka Andre and guess what we were talking about? JSA. Specifically how awesome Jesse is and how we both want to marry her. As if that wasn't enough, we spent at least an hour talking about how awesome Geoff is on GL and how everyone who doesn't like it is a moron. It was sorta like talking to you but without the porn. The point? Even while totally engaged and smitten with him I was thinking about how I couldn't wait to talk to you about someone else loving Jesse. There is no beating our Thursday/Saturday/Getting to be Everyday chats. Ever ♥

2) I totally didn't spend an hour last night watching all the m/f/m porn I could find thinking about Clint/Bucky/Natasha. Nope. Noooo siree, Bob. omfg it was so hot and I think my brain broke thinking about Bucky doing this one thing and yeah nope totally didn't Cough ( ... )
