I really like he idea of painted screens. How were you thinking of doing that? As hangings? or as folding moveable screens? I've seen versions of the latter done in silks(in a movie) that were stunning in their simplicity. Also like the idea of a kitchen that is hidden(at least from the shoulders down) from the main seating area. Then you don't have to worry about hiding the inevitable un-period coolers, stoves and general kitchen mess.

I would recommend encampment pieces that actually function, and will last many years: - shelves / drawers, etc. for kitchen to tame the chaos & make it easier for different people to use it as a kitchen, without inviting critter guests (of the human & non-human variety) - table-age, benches all good things. - common shelter; I love the bedoin tent idea. - wooden boxes for coolers, containers
In all cases, once you know it will work without succumbing to entropy, then you can add the decorations (like the dagging). Then again, a good bedouin tent is not only good-looking, it's already period-looking :) I find investing some capital initially can save costs in the long-run, since you don't have to replace things as often. A very period approach, as well.
