I think I've been pretty insulated from all the Ashley-hate because I'm not as active in the Mass Effect fandom as I am in Dragon Age. Does she get trashed mostly on the BSN forums? Because that would not surprise me at all.
She gets trashed everywhere, but especially on the BSN, yup. XD And in youtube comments, oddly enough. But there are a loooot of people here on lj on the masseffect comm who always say things like "I just really dislike Ashley...BUT NOT FOR THE REASONS EVERYONE ELSE DOES...I just dislike her~~" and it makes me :T
I can understand her whole "it's not really racism!" thing with aliens rubbing people the wrong way, but there's so much more to her character, and she doesn't even keep feeling that way through the entire game. And she even tells a pro-human politician to shut the hell up in the game so...she really can't win. It's annoying. She gets lambasted on BSN though.

I've only played ME1 once, and I'd already watched my husband play so I knew I'd have to kill off either Ashley or Kaidan and so pretty early on I made the decision to romance Kaidan and kill Ashley, so I never really bothered to get to know her. Now that I've fallen utterly in love with Mass Effect 2 (and completed it several times), I really want to replay ME1 and this time I'm going to romance Liara and kill off Kaidan and get to know Ashley. I'm quite looking forward to it! I've heard a lot of Ashley-hate but I never thought she seemed that bad
