I don't think he's really thought it through that far yet. He's only at Mark 3, so I'm assuming the armor that would be more efficient to assemble would come later. With the movie I think they were also trying to maintain a sense of realism and having the extremis line in the movie is not as believable as some rich genius having an assembly line for his high-tech suit in his basement. I really have no idea how they're going to alter it for the next movie, though O_o. Good question.

Personally, I think he just made the armour as a personal weapon against those who captured him and had his weapons. Saving people is really an afterthought when I really think of it. Using the armour only as a weapon to go after his weapons that are in the hands of "evil", well... he won't need to really think of quick assembly since he can do that on his own time.
However, if he actually plans (and we all know he will) to be part of the Avengers, well, he has to overcome that hindrance of going home to "change". Saving people does not wait on you to go home and change clothes, Tony. -__-;;
I really hoped that the magnetism idea would work but the metal the Armour consists of nailed that down unless gold and titanium together actually is a magnetic metal but I highly doubt that.
Well at this point he's still at the stage where he's into finding caches of 'his' weapons and destroying them. He's not Superman, dropping everything because there's a bridge collapsing somewhere, y'know? He doesn't need a suit that's there at a moment's notice.
A valid point but I'm actually speculating for the future when he becomes a part of the Avengers Initiative, really. If the ending of Iron Man alludes to anything, it's that he's starting to get into the mindset he could be a hero.
*shrug* He's rich. He can just lug it around with him under lock and key (fingerprint lock, retinal scan, whatever). Given a few years I'm sure he'd be able to come up with a way to get into it without being bolted in. I love that scene, too.
True enough though I doubt he won't be questioned if he lugs around a suitcase since I don't think the armour would fold flat like earlier models of comic versions and have it fit in a briefcase of all things.
As for the other way than to be bolted into the armour, I would say magnetism but that won't work.
If we know Stark, he'll figure it out, somehow. I'm just trying to think of a way he could do it months after the end of the movie when he's more comfortable with the Superhero gig.
You know, I'm pretty sure he just had the suit shipped around in a crate for the Extremis comic. Maybe he has an entire car for it, kind of like an entourage.
In Extremis, the current armor is shipped in a crate -- Tony tells people it is his car, and acts like an eccentric rich guy about it, so people just think he's being weird.
He also has a collapsible version of the armor that is an older version, but has some weaknesses the current armor doesn't have. But it is still useful, and Tony does use it when he needs to.
First possibility, already mentioned here: private planes AND private houses all along the world. Can't believe he wouldn't have at least two-three houses in every interesting place in the world. He can afford it. ;-> Second possibility (not mutually exclusive with the first one): one suit in a favourite car/truck for emergencies. Third possibility, though I'm not sure whether it's canonical: the newer suits could have some autopilot, homing on Tony. Well, not exactly on Tony ;-) Two meters distance should be enough. Thus Tony could call the suit to himself, or command Jarvis to send it. :-)
