I bought my first house before I was old enough to vote, and therefore was young and dumb. I disliked the wallpaper so I painted over it. Twenty years later, the walls still looked fine.
*sigh* And that works great if the wallpaper is stuck tight to the wall. The house I moved out of, I tried that on and the wallpaper peeled off in sheets with the paint -- fairly expensive wallpaper remover, that was.
Given how well the wallpaper was stuck to the walls here, however, I probably could have gotten away with that. But I didn't want to risk another mess.
