Virtually everyone I know consumes computerized calendaring, and when it comes up, without fail, they all complain about it. I've heard people say, "Gmail is a great way for me to do email," but no one ever says, "X is a great way for me to do calendaring

Yes, yes it is.
As an added bonus, say you do manage to implement an epically awesome calendering system that captures all of these magic edge cases for every user's killer feature set. Guess what? Unless it can cross-schedule with Exchange, it still sucks, because people are stuck using Exchange. Oh, and nothing can really cross-schedule with Exchange, because they don't expose any sort of documented protocol for doing so.
