So, something many of you won't know about me is that I knit. I haven't been doing it long, or anything. Basically, I have a lot of dear friends who knit. I'm a nerd. If I want to knit socks, I sit down and read four books about knitting socks so I know all about it and then I give it a whirl. :)
I do have a very good local knitting store where I can go for help if I need it (like they helped me figure out how many skeins to buy for the shawl, and gave me advice when I could tell that my gauge was too tight at first). And, of course, as I mentioned, a lot of my friends seem to be knitters.

I do have a tendency to learn things the same way - find as much material as possible on the topic, take it in and then give it a go. For some reason, I let a friend convince me that knitting wasn't a good candidate for that approach.
