I made it myself

So, something many of you won't know about me is that I knit. I haven't been doing it long, or anything. Basically, I have a lot of dear friends who knit. So, last year after a visit with my folks produced a small skein of yarn that I (and my folks, and some random strangers) had spun and plied, and I was casting about for what I was going to do ( Read more... )

Yay! Great pics. I really like the pic of the shawl from behind. I'm still working on my first scarf... but slowly making progress.

Keep with it! Your first scarf is a lot more ambitious than mine was.

Nicely done. I haven't done such a variety of things in crochet..I did make the women in the family scarves for Christmas. Now I am onto baby blanket 1 of 2.

That's amazing! Did you have someone to ask for guidance as you learned, or was it all stuff you picked up from books/online reading? (I keep meaning to have a friend show me some knitting basics, but it never happens... )

Well, the scarf I pretty much did in secret, on my own, just from online information. Most other stuff I've learned on my own, from books or online. Mostly books.

I'm a nerd. If I want to knit socks, I sit down and read four books about knitting socks so I know all about it and then I give it a whirl. :)

I do have a very good local knitting store where I can go for help if I need it (like they helped me figure out how many skeins to buy for the shawl, and gave me advice when I could tell that my gauge was too tight at first). And, of course, as I mentioned, a lot of my friends seem to be knitters.

Seriously, check out knittinghelp.com if you're interested. They've got videos and everything.

Awesome! Thanks for the link.

I do have a tendency to learn things the same way - find as much material as possible on the topic, take it in and then give it a go. For some reason, I let a friend convince me that knitting wasn't a good candidate for that approach.
