“… I’ll be there this afternoon, Dad. Yes, yes. I have to go now. See you - give mom a kiss from me, okay? Bye.”
Casey pushed the off button, closing his eyes and rubbing his face. He didn’t cry, though. He shouldn’t. Not now - otherwise…
“Who was that, Case?”
Casey turned and looked up, his lips pressing together into a lame excuse of a smile.
“No one,” he muttered.
He saw how Zeke’s eyes turned into slits and could tell that Zeke would never buy that. But his boyfriend didn’t say anything, simply backing away and disappearing into the kitchen.
“Zeke?” Casey called out hesitantly.
“Yeah?”
“I - uh. Just - don’t wait for me for dinner, ‘kay?”
Zeke peeked out from the door.
“You going somewhere?”
Casey wouldn’t look at Zeke.
“Casey? Is there anything you’re not telling me?”
“No, nothing.” Casey dipped his chin into his chest, fingering his cell phone nervously. For some time there was only silence. Not once did Casey dare lift his face.
“I heard you, Casey,” Suddenly Zeke spoke. Quietly. “What, dad, be there this afternoon, what are all those about? You’re going home? Why, Case?”
Casey’s face scrunched up.
“Zeke…”
“Something’s definitely bothering you. What is it?”
Zeke’s voice sounded so near. Casey was startled when realizing Zeke had been standing over him.
“I can’t tell you …”
“That’s garbage and you know it.”
Once more silence hung in the air before Casey whispered something so softly that it almost escaped Zeke.
“Mom’s got a stroke and she hasn’t wakened up ‘till now.”
