I share this nostalgia for the glory days of LJ. I find that the myspace and facebook ilk are brilliant tools to keep contact with friends and make plans and keep tabs on people who might not be as permanent in their position or situation, I believe I've yet to actually MAKE a friend out of any site similar to them.
On LJ, I found just the opposite to be true, my friends list is by and large FILLED with people I've not even had a chance to meet yet (though I have conversed with a good number of them over the telephone). I think it helps largely that when you see a new journal there's a whole LOAD of pretext to encourage or discourage two people to become friends in a more realtime sense.
I think I'm going to start writing in mine on a regular basis again soon... a situation of sensitive nature (which I thought had completely abated, but turned out it hadn't) seems to finally be settling down.
