17: Calamity

[Just as the sun begins to set, when it seems like most of the chaos has subsided, there's suddenly a new sound amidst the cacophony the earthquake has brought. Cries; cries that sound explicitly not human, from roars to gurgles, to battle cries in a foreign tongue. Following these cries are the demons who made them, wanting nothing more than to ( Read more... )

[The release of the power cap was a bit like taking her first full breath of air. She'd spent the day digging people out of the rubble, a tedious but hardly taxing task, but now that dusk had fallen her spiritual senses were buzzing in a way which demanded that she investigate, or else she would not be getting any rest.

So Matsumoto heads towards the source of the loudest buzzing, her eyes peeled for the source.

It's not long until she spots one. Like and yet unlike a Hollow.]

Hello, ugly.

[Indeed the Loa is doomed, and vanishes into nothing as it's hit by the strike. The Abbadon's jostle through the ash, but slow down considerably due to it, and there are cries of pain from them, though they're not defeated yet.

The Nekomata on the other hand is thrashing, having never accounted a spell like this before. She hisses before starting to cast another spell-- and then simply explodes into flames.

When the smoke clears from the explosion, Matsumoto will be able to see a man dressed in a green haori, with geta on his feet. Naoya has quite the smile on his face. ]

They're not too intelligent either.

[Well, hello. She didn't sense you coming either, and that is starting to get very, very annoying. Matsumoto moves a bit backwards in order to keep both this newcomer and the Abbandons in her sight.

He's not attacking, and wouldn't seem threatening at all if it wasn't for his smile and the utter comfort he exhibits in the situation, and she instantly places him as the most dangerous threat. But that doesn't mean that he's the most imminent -- and she tilts her hilt to the side, redirecting the ash to sweep back again towards the Abbadons. It's still spread out in a single line, cresting up like a tidal wave to grind them down to dust.]

They seemed to think differently.

Nekomata have a high opinion of themselves. [Naoya watches as all but one of the Abbadons gets hit by the wave, and disappear in turn as well. One of them manages to roll up over the wave though and makes to body slam her.

He'll just stand there watching.]

[It can try - and it's surprisingly fast for its size - but she doesn't plan on waiting around to see how fast the instant she watches it move. The ashes coalesce into a whip, and coil around the Abbadon. She'll slice right through it if given half a chance.]

You're the one who summoned them. What do you want?

((Hitsu will likely tag in after you!))

[ The Abbadon gets utterly decimated, and implodes violently. Hardy as they may be against magic, they can't take physical hits at all.]

Is that what she told you?

[He thinks for a moment-- it's not in his style to lie, but he won't confirm it in so many words either.]

Who says I want anything?

[ooc: Kay!]

[Hitsugaya's moving the second he feels Matsumoto release her shikai. If she's doing that, then something is dire enough for it and it probably needs his attention. Any survivors in the rubble where he was digging are just going to have to wait -- he has more urgent matters to attend to.

His sword is drawn when he arrives -- no sense being caught flat-footed -- and there's a moment before he makes his presence known when he just listens. Great, a summoner. Can't he just get an old-fashioned Espada? A few Hollows?

He steps into a short flash step, so as to appear between -- and slightly to the side of -- Matsumoto and the summoner. He'll just made an entrance here and he's keeping a tight lid on his reiatsu. He glances at Matsumoto, then turns his attention to the summoner. He'll give his lieutenant more attention later; she's still standing and Haineko's ash is still around, so it's not like she needs immediate attention.]

If you're summoning something, you want something. Who the hell are you?

[Yeah, you attacked his lieutenant, ( ... )

Hitsu -> Matsu -> Naoya ? ashesandpearls August 5 2010, 20:50:18 UTC
[Watching the Abbadon dissipate gave Matsumoto no small sense of satisfaction, and just when she was about to turn and answer the one that she assumed was the summoner - who else would be so calm, and know the name of that demon? - her captain appears. She should have known that it wouldn't take long.

Something about the set of her shoulders relaxes when Hitsugaya comes into view, but other than that she doesn't acknowledge him. She does, however, call Haineko back into her sealed state, and the sword reappears in her hand.]

Good evening. [The appearance of Hitsu catches him off guard a little, and he looks at both of them. At this point, he's outnumbered, hmm. ]

I don't. [He really doesn't-- he just wanted to see how well the demons would fare here, and who could possibly beat them. Naoya's just collecting data in a sense.]

I don't answer questions for free. [Then directed at Matsumoto:] However, since you beat that bunch of demons, I suppose an answer is adequate.

Naoya.

[Naoya. Hitsugaya's committing that to memory, have no doubt about it. His sword's still drawn, but he's not making any overtly threatening moves -- not yet, anyway.]

Well enough, then. I don't have questions for you. [That's not entirely true, but Hitsugaya doesn't want to waste breath asking things that might not be answered.]

Get rid of your demons and get out. [Now the sword's tip is raising, moving to point directly at Naoya's chest. He doesn't have to threaten that he'll try to enforce his orders, not in so many words; the sword will make it implicit.]

[Her hand tightens on Haineko's hilt. She has questions. He still hasn't told them why he's done this - or if he'll do it again. But she's not about to do anything other than back up her captain.

...oh, but she wants to ask.]

[His red eyes gaze at the weapon that's pointing at him, but still he wears a smile on his face.] They're not my demons, and I can't unsummon them any more than you can.

[In a blink, he'll be teleporting back a good distance, out of range of a sword slash.]

All I did was open the portal. [As if to punctuate his statement, more cries of demons are heard in the distance. They're pouring out fairly regularly.

He looks at Matsumoto again: ]

Did you have another question?

[That's not quite a flash step Naoya pulled, but it's close enough that it sets Hitsugaya on edge. He doesn't like the thought of an enemy moving more quickly than he can -- especially an enemy who will talk over him and address his lieutenant instead. Some of the reiatsu he's been keeping a tight hold on leaks through; a rush of wind will whirl around them and the temperature will drop.]

It's not a smart idea to let loose something you can't control.

[His attention will wander for a moment, toward the cries in the distance. Damn it. As if they didn't have enough to worry about.]

[The continued attention he gives her makes Matsumoto cock an eyebrow, but with an invitation like that she can hardly continue to contain herself.]

Why are you doing this?

[She doesn't expect a straight answer, but if he had a reason that could be in any way acceptable... if not, they have a responsibility to stop him.]

[ The rush of wind blows Naoya's hair around, and he adjusts his haori unconsciously. It almost felt like magic to him.]

It's a shame then, that the person who can control them isn't here. [But his tone doesn't sound like it's a shame at all, he's enjoying this. As for the control issue, Naoya is half-lying as he can command a group of them.

Matsumoto's cocked eyebrow makes his grin grow wider. She's just amusing, or more amusing than Hitsugaya, at least.]

You could call it an experiment, I suppose. [An experiment of how his abilities fair here, an experiment on how the residents will react, on how the demons fair in Luceti, all of these things.

Well, and he's trolling. ]

[So much for not asking questions; that's just too much to pass up and Hitsugaya is determined to bring attention back on himself. No more of this talking over him.]

What sort of experiment involves letting these things loose? [Granted, he doesn't know much about them -- Matsumoto's the one who fought them -- but he doesn't think any good will come of that answer. His eyes are narrowed as he's looking at Naoya: he's thinking how best to get around that apparent teleportation.]
