Agreed about the "passion" of Mumblecore, and the DIY ethic, but as a person that has actually seen all the mumblecore films, let me be the first to say: don't buy the hype. All the movies are incredibly shallow, American navel-gazing (the Quiet City trailer is actually BETTER than the film itself) posing as substantial social critique -- and these filmmakers have the audacity to frame these films as "realistic" depictions of drifting urban youth. Please, enough movies about young, bourgeois-bohemian hipster white kids. Oddly enough, I actually met Andrew Bujalksi late last year at an art gallery (strangely, he's a friend of a friend -- leave it to the hipsters!) and came THISCLOSE to telling him to his face how much I found his films to be painfully pretentious. Of the films in the "mumblecore" hype machine "lol" and "The Puffy Chair" are the most tolerable, though I admit I recall "Hannah Takes the Stairs" most strongly due to the prominence of forever-cute Greta Gerwig

hey super thanks for the link man! unfortunately it says this -- " Alle Ihrem Land (Philippines) zugewiesenen Download-Slots sind derzeit besetzt. Versuchen Sie es in einigen Stunden erneut oder installieren Sie die Megaupload Toolbar - dann gibt es für Sie keine Slot-Limitierung mehr!" and i don't know what that means but i'm thinking it says that the Philippines has only a limited number of download slots. shet! :D
Aha someone's listening to Vampire Weekend too! Isn't it trippy?
I'm proud to be part of your mumblecore project circa 2005. I've seen bits of Quiet City, I think they previewed it here in Toronto late last year (?) and it kinda reminds me of Before Sunrise. I don't think the Linklater film falls into this category since it's definitely not low-budget but it probably is a precedent to the genre?
there's this movie i watched recently called " eagle vs. shark" that kind of sounds like it fits the category you are describing. it was also about this couple. it looked really cheaply and they were from new zealand or something so the accents were really funny. it was kind of boring though.
Someone made an allusion to graphic novels so I guess my sentiments can be summarized into: Everyone's looking for the next American Splendor.
Mumblecore. Curious how the name is so "mainstream American pop culture." Add -core to any word at all and you have a trend. Emocore. Hardxxxcore. Suicidecore. Girlcore. Puppycore. Icecreamcore. Robotcore. Quarkcore. :D
Don't forget Kindercore records, my personal favorite! like i said Mumblecore was really just a joke, and for some reason it totally stuck. it DOES feel like the most apt description of these guys though, i must admit.
yeah i think someone should really just go out there and make a movie version of Adrian Tomine's wonderful wonderful graphic novel Shortcomings. enough of this improv crap.
seriously curiouswattsfinnFebruary 4 2008, 11:00:50 UTC
wow you guys definitely know what you're talking about! it's sick :D
anyhoo, sorry to interrupt but how about "All the Real Girls"? Does it qualify as mumblecore? when i saw the trailer for "Quiet City" it's the first thing that came to mind.
Re: seriously curiousintrigeroFebruary 4 2008, 18:20:21 UTC
it should :) like i said in the debate above, David Gordon Green's films, especially All The Real Girls, should be the perfect example of good mumblecore. but he never declared himself part of the movement (and it should be noted that ATRG came out after mumblecore), and neither did a lot of people doing the same thing. sayang! hahaha. sana may champion na ang mumblecore!
Re: seriously curious_fiction_February 5 2008, 17:16:51 UTC
david gordon green can't be mumblecore! diba parang american urban post-college angst yan? he's rural! and only the girl went to college from what i know! and of course he shoots on film and has a brilliant cinematographer... (that said i haven't seen any of these mumblecore films. though i watched a few episodes of joe swanberg's terrible sexfest internet series "young american bodies" (http://www.youngamericanbodies.com/). why do so many american movies and tv shows have to declare themselves american? parang a third of the films i read about from sundance had america (or american) in the title. olats pare. you should make a film like "filipino gangsters", "filipino rakenrol"...ay wag na lang.
Re: seriously curiousintrigeroFebruary 5 2008, 19:27:57 UTC
yeah i fuckin link y.a.b. above asshole! you didn't read the entry no? sometimes i think swanberg makes films just so he can show his penis all the time.
actually Bujalski shoots on film, and his stuff is rural-ish, and some of his characters haven't graduated college. i think the main difference DGG's got talent.
owww! dude what if Bujalski decides to icerocket his name (and i'm pretty sure he does) and sees what we've written. goodbye, American film career.
