SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 2, 2014

What lies behind me and what lies before me are tiny matters compared to what lies within me.The morning of my first marathon, I woke to my alarm at 5:30am; groggily nibbled my way through a bagel and some water; packed five little ziplock bags with pieces of bagels, potato chips, and orange ( Read more... )

(I'm here from the runners community!)

Great report. I love reports that have so much detail! Your first marathon is always more mental than physical. Be careful though. I ran my first marathon in 2009 and I've run 13 mroe since. They can be addicting!

I've toyed with the idea of running the New York Marathon. Your report gives me a much better idea of what to expect, should I ever get around to that endeavor.

(I'm in the San Franisco Bay Area, When I visited NYC and people asked me what I thought of it, I said "It's San Francisco on steroids!")

I really wanted to make sure I wrote this entry thoroughly, because I know this is what I am going to refer back to for years to come. I feel open to the idea of doing another marathon in the future, which is all I wanted coming out of this experience, but I'm also definitely glad for a break from those 20 milers. Right now, I'm thinking a half in the spring, and then re-evaluating from there. I know what you mean, though; crossing a finish line always makes me want the next one!

Keep in mind that the NYC Marathon experience would probably be quiet different for a faster runner. At least, the crowds would be denser for sure!

It feels almost like I built myself a little stone fortress, something that will keep standing there, bolstering me when I need to remember that I can be strong and capable and set goals and accomplish them. I guess that's the lasting joy. :)

(And how could I not? It feels like I'll always come back to LJ for the most momentous occasions that need to be preserved in words.)

You did it!! I am SO proud of you! Wish I could have been there to cheer you on- I assure you I was there in spirit (even though it took me longer than it should to read this, I wanted to make sure I could sit down and read it with minimal interruption to give you the attention you deserve!) But seriously, you are an inspiration!

Thanks for the support, even from afar! It's crazy to think that we were emailing back and forth only a few years ago trying to keep each other on track, huh?

While you were gearing up for the marathon, I kept thinking "man, I should really email her and see if she'll get my butt back in gear!" I have to admit you stayed on track a bit more than I did! The only reason I look good and weigh what I do is because breastfeeding always makes the pounds fall off of me!

I wasn't as on track as I could have been, though, especially with my mid-week runs. And, despite what you might think otherwise, I actually wouldn't recommend marathon training for weight loss -- you get so hungry!
