This is a perfect example of why I don't want to teach in public schools. Namely that I would be fired. Revolution and dissent are the essence of American values. How can suppressing them in the name of patriotism even make sense to these people?
I think every student regardless of ethnicity or geographic location should be aware of the story of Southwest settlement in all it's ugliness. But at the same time I perceive a conflict between building self-esteem and cultural identity and emphasizing historical victimhood by the USA. I think it would be more constructive to use material centering on the survival and adaptation of indigenous and hispanic peoples in the face of adversity over the centuries. But maybe that's too Polyanna-esque, and maybe that material hasn't been written (yet).
Oh wait, what's that on my bookshelf - Thanks college!riotgrrlscoutApril 23 2008, 21:08:58 UTC
A rudely abridged personal library listing:
Ambivalent Conquest The Broken Spears The Columbian Exchange Colonial Latin America Riots in the Cities The US-Mexican War Changing Structure of Mexico To Lead as Equals Inevitable Revolutions
Indian Givers Killing the White Man's Indian Native American Testimony From a Native Son Like a Hurricane
Deterring Democracy The Communist Manifesto On Liberty
Quick, lock me up before I corrupt someone. Won't you please think of the children?
i dunno, i'm kinda conflicted about the whole thing. maybe i'd rather ask questions & gather input/generate conversation than formulate an opinion. i mean, jess is right that our country was founded on "revolution & dissent," but breaking away from a country in order to gain more freedom is maybe different than going into a country to gain more money & freedom & then bashing it for providing you w/the ability to do so

Specifically, in my view, the specific wording "surrender their curriculum".
Seriously? Dissident texts and programs must be made the property of the state, lest they infect the minds of their constituents?
"we've always been at war with Eastasia."
