Look, the whole goddamn world should stop eating cantaloupe, OK?

And by "the whole goddamn world" I mean North America, natch.

I dunno who's producing it but there's a Listeria outbreak that's killed people--by which I mean people are dead--or in some cases merely hospitalized so they're only in tremendous pain, missing work, and wracking up huge ( Read more... )

Unless you live in Rocky Ford, and assuming that the farmer grew his own (some people actually buy produce to re-sell at Farmer's Markets), you're probably okay. But don't count on instant illness. Listeria symptoms appear anywhere between 3 and 70 days after infection, but usually around 21 days.

Hey so I'm actually not in an effected state (yes I know they are adding states every few days). Also I bought from the farm, not a market. That's one of the great things about upstate NY. There is a farm every few feet; they grow more than corn and they only sell what they grow.

Then you're probably safe, at least from this outbreak. :)

Is there another farm producing the ick cantaloupes now? Or is it still just Rocky Ford?

Rocky Ford isn't a farm, it's an entire region. They have identified one particular farm in the region (Jenson Farms) from which cantaloupe have definitely tested positive, and so far, cantaloupe from other farms have not.

Ah... thanks for the clarification.

Found this article (not for here, but still HEB), that says HEB is not buying from affected region.

The ones I've had recently from HEB are stickered as from Whitehouse farms brand. We haven't had any issues with them. They've been TINY this year, but very tasty.

Does washing get rid of it? I wash my cantaloupe.

No. It's actually in the meat of the cantaloupe, not just on the skin.

Oh. Gross. :(

Glad I haven't bought any cantaloupe recently.

I don't buy it much anyway; it's pretty well my least favorite melon. And after this oubreak, and the reading I've done about cantaloupe because of it, I'll probably never eat it again. Apparently it is in the top 5 fruits for illness outbreaks every year. Not a high recommendation!
