Dream 01 → First Principles

Feb 25, 2010 07:23

Warnings: Angst. Lots of it. Based on a canon event that is never canonically described. Head canon in effect throughout.
Dream Effects: Confusion from the start, only intensifying as the dream progresses. A growing sense of helplessness, frustrated anger and sadness, and finally a near-overwhelming feeling of hopelessly misaimed guilt.

[Well. It was one thing for Ken to see something that would happen in the future; it was another entirely for Youji to see something that happened so far back into the past.

[His initial instinct was to ignore it, pretend he'd just missed this broadcast, but. He's thinking of how many mornings he's seen Ken and wondering how often he has this dream.]

Do you want a beer?

[Ken isn't surprised that it's Youji; he's thankful it isn't anybody else. Even so, he hesitates for a while before answering, wiping his eyes roughly and taking three deep, shuddering breaths. Composing himself. It won't do for Youji to see him like this, no matter what he might have just inadvertently revealed to him.]

Everyone saw that, too, didn't they?

[And yes. Yes, he does.]

On the bright side, they aren't laughing this time.

It's in the refrigerator, if you want it.

I'd prefer it if they were. Shit. I don't--

I just didn't want you to know. Or anyone. After everything else... this shouldn't be a big deal any more, right?

[Since he's sure no one else will be speaking his language already, he sits there observing the scene without saying a word.]

[Slowly shakes his head. He can't understand this boy.]

[Ken blinks at him.]

Hi? Are you all right?

[Seeing something from Ken's past makes him pause and he sighs.]

Are you alright?

Aya?

[Ken can't say he's exactly surprised by this either; he may not exactly be Aya's number one fan, but he's not going to pretend that means Aya - even the one from his time, still less this one - genuinely doesn't give a shit about anything to do with the rest of them.

[What he wasn't expecting was Aya to actually say anything, still less to ask if he was okay.]

Uh... yeah. I'm all right.

[He attempts a small smile. It probably doesn't work right but hey, it's a smile, right?]

[Oh he knows that smile isn't real and he pauses a moment. Ken's trying at least.]

It seems we all must face these flashbacks...

Ah... Ken?

[He remembers meeting him once, back when people were hallucinating.]

[Ken doesn't think he knows this guy, but it occurs to him after a moment that maybe the him that was here before did

[This is probably kind of an awkward way to get reacquainted.]

Um. Hi? Have we met?

[He can recognize Ken's language as the same as Naoto's but... the problem is that he doesn't understand it.]

I'm afraid I don't speak your language.

[Oh yeah OF COURSE. Clearly translation still isn't happening. Okay.

[For a moment Ken simply sits there frowning at the Dreamberry. He... really isn't very good at English. Still, at least this guy actually speaks English properly. Does that make him more or less likely to understand Ken's faltering attempts to speak it?]

Hello. My name is Ken. I... not speak England language good. You not speak Japan language?
