Summary: There were five people at ARC that Olivia Wilson, personal secretary to James Lester, thought were irreplaceable.

There were five people at ARC that Olivia Wilson, personal secretary to James Lester, thought were irreplaceable. Although her own role was important enough she also knew enough to gather that she wasn’t one of them.

James Lester himself one of them. Possibly the second most important person at ARC or maybe he was third. Either way Olivia believed that without Mr Lester, his guidance and patience and occasional sarcasm, the ARC would not function to the best of its abilities.

Mr Lester could, at times, be a hard ass. Olivia knew this because of the numerous memos or calls or general telephone conversations she had been told to deal with. Mr Lester may have scathing wit on his side, a sharp tongue usually helped in dealing with politicians, but he was also smart, organised and very aware of how to work the corporate ladder. ARC was a very well funded and fairly unknown entity. Olivia was under no delusions as to who’s brilliant mind managed that.

Dr Cutter too, he was important. She’d seen first hand what had happened when Dr Cutter hadn’t been on the ball. After the Future Predator had been removed from the facility they’d all been anxious. When Dr Cutter had arrived back seemingly less than his usual self there had been murmurs throughout the sector. Dr Cutter was the only one that they saw holding the team together. And they were important to the ARC as a unit, not really as individuals.

Nick Cutter was the man who held it together, he was the brains behind the operation, knowing about the anomalies, the creatures that came through and being just a general all around smart guy. Not as smart as Mr Lester though, Olivia liked her job thank you very much.

Connor. Connor Temple. Despite his own little insecurities Olivia often wondered what would’ve happened if Connor had been kicked off the team at the very start. Connor was their walking encyclopaedia of useful and useless information. Even with the wild clothes, babbling nonsense and occasional shooting of civilians, Connor was one of the most irreplaceable people Olivia knew - maybe because there’d never really be anyone like him anywhere else.

Olivia could honestly say that she’d never really met Kelly Pollock. But she was irreplaceable herself. Kelly Pollock was the sole supplier of coffee, tea, chocolate and office supplies to the ARC. Once a week she’d pull up out back with all the goodies and then draw away. But really, who could live without caffeine and chocolate? So yeah, Kelly was just as important as Cutter.

The only person that really mattered though was probably one of the people you’d consider a grunt. They were seen to the Government as being replaceable, although it wasn’t the nicest way to put it and they’d never say it out loud or in public but the Special Forces soldiers seen as a commodity, or so Olivia believed. She knew different.

Without one person Lester would continually be in a state of frustration. One person stopped the constant barrage of sarcasm; one person stopped the random biting words at the drop of a hat. One person helped to keep Olivia’s out box blessedly empty on those annoying paperwork days. Olivia cringed slightly at the sound of Mr Lester’s voice, yelling down the phone at yet another incompetent civil servant who was unwittingly making Olivia’s job hard.

“He got any meetings this afternoon?” Olivia looked up at the voice, shaking her head with a smile. The saviour is here, she thought fleetingly.

“No, I’ll hold all his calls.” She got a mock salute as the guest headed for Lester’s office and Olivia let herself relax.

No, with Lester still in charge, ARC would never be able to function without on Lieutenant Jon Lyle. As unprofessional as it was Olivia was very grateful that Lieutenant Lyle often paid Lester visits during the office hours. Those visits were short, but afterwards Mr Lester was always in a better mood. And thank God for small mercies.

Once again, Lyle is property of fredbassett, he just likes popping in for a chat.
