Light in the Dark

“So it’s a star…that isn’t really a star. Is that what you’re telling me?” Morgan asked, looking across at the Indian chief in the small tee-pee.

“Yes, a star that is not a star,” The Indian Chief recited the prophecy again. “Our tribe is on a great journey to seek the wonders of this great miracle.” He was sitting cross-legged and smoking a large pipe, the smoke was venting out of a hole in the top of the tee-pee.

“How do you know it’s a miracle?” Morgan asked, “Do you know about when you noticed it? If it’s a miracle that means it wasn’t always here, right?”

“Many moons ago, since then it has grown in size.” The chief said. “As Father Sun rises and falls, the star stays and grows in Cousin Sky. It is a great source of power, it heats Mother Earth and provides light when Father Sun falls under the mountains.”

“So it’s like having two suns, but one is growing.” Morgan said, “What happens if it keeps growing and consumes the Earth?”

“It keeps growin’, that’s why me and my buddies here are headed to it. Figure it’s gotta be somethin’.” The cowboy said, spitting on the dusty ground.

“Yes, it is something.” The Doctor said, trying to make sense of this strange so-called star, “It keeps growing you say?” He turned back to the cowboy. The cowboy was dressed in the usual cowboy attire for this time: ten gallon hat- which the Doctor was quite fond of- chaps, boots, a bandana and a dusty button up shirt.

“Yeah, beats the hell outta me.” He shook his head. “It’s like a second sun, keeps burnin’ all the time.”

“Really.” The Doctor said and turned back to the star, “And you say that you’re going to it? Why? It’s something strange, unknown, why would you want to go towards it?” The Doctor then turned and eyed the cowboy.

“Yeah.” He said bluntly and the Doctor ceased his onslaught and looked at him squarely in the eyes.

“Room for one more?” A smile spread across the Doctors face at a frightening speed.

“You said you and your tribe are making a journey to the star, why?” Morgan pressed on, adjusting his position on the less-than-comfortable  animal- Morgan assumed buffalo- skin mat.

“It is foretold in the prophecy.”

“Now, is that the same prophecy that told you of the blue box and the Doctor?” Morgan asked, “Or a completely different one.”

“They are one in the same. The prophecy is told: a star will grow, a journey will be made, the Blue Box will appear.” The chief said calmly. “The star had grown, the Blue Box has appeared.”

“Right, all that’s left is the journey then.” Morgan paused, “So it doesn’t state what you have to do when you get to the star, or even why, just that you have to do it. No consequences if you don’t.”

“What are you trying to say, pale face?” The chief puffed on his pipe.

“I’m trying to say is that there is no reason for you to be going. The prophecy says nothing, all it says is that there’s going to be a star, a journey, and a blue box. What’s the good of a prophecy if it doesn’t tell you any specifics?”

Before the chief could answer, the flap of the tee-pee opened and one of the chief’s advisors-one of the men who led Morgan to the tee-pee- walked in. “Father Sun is setting, the tribe is ready to continue its journey.”

“Very well,” The chief said, putting his pipe down on the ground beside him. “We will continue shortly.” He said standing up as the advisor left the tent. “You will be coming with us.”

“Is that a suggestion or a demand?” Morgan asked.

“You will come with us.” The chief said again and left the tent.

“Guess it is a demand.”  Morgan said, getting up and following the chief outside. Outside the tee-pees and tents were all packed up, it looked like they had never even set a camp down on the spot. “That is very efficient.” Morgan said once he got outside and looked at the nothingness that was the unsettled desert. Behind them, some of the advisors- and the bigger men that Morgan had clumped with the group- were already packing up the chief’s tent.

The sun was setting in the sky but the star still shined brightly off in the distance.  Meanwhile, a little ways away, the Doctor and the cowboys were starting to make the same journey to the light.
