Well, clearly Russians in general and your dad in particular, have no taste.

What I would be more worried about is your DAD wanting to wear them. Do Russian men also go for ponchos and lace fingerless gloves and all the other gender-specific abysses of taste?

Excuse me butting in, but I will also attest to their use as slippers - being the kind of person who is cold in all but a heat-wave, having fleece-lined slippers that also keep that bit of ankle between the foot and trouser-hem warm is a godsend. However, these slippers cost, usually about £8-£14, and are not to be worn outdoors as water + fleece = rancid smells and wet feet.

Spending £50+ pounds on outdoor footwear that is awful in rain, snow or other weather, looks awful and doesn't even have arch support in its favour is inexcusable.

For about three or four months, I wrote marketing material for a company that sold these in the UK - regarding the terminology, they are generally called sheepskin or Ugg-style boots, while UGG refers to the branded items. Purpose wise, arachnekallisti has got it spot on - they were originally used by Australian surfers, this spread to (if I remember rightly) Florida and California, where the term UGG was (controversially) trademarked by Deckers and a series of lawsuits about whether the term was style-specific or brand-specific emerged were filed around the world.

They look god-awful.
