Discworld thoughts

I'm not crazy, right? There is something fundamentally wrong with casting a white guy to play Twoflower, the most prominent character to originate from the Counterweight Continent: the Discworld equivalent of Imperial China (with some Japanese elements thrown in ( Read more... )

WEAVES: "So they're casting for a Discworld movie, right? And they've just cast Twoflower."
LIZ: "Yeah?"
WEAVES: "Sean Astin."

*appalled silence*

LIZ "...but Twoflower's Asian!"

Well, he's not offensive.I found him bland, generally, but he's sweet and well intentioned. Dim, yes, but he tries.

It's a little stereotypical, but a brass American in a Hawaiian shirt wouldn't be?

See, I liked Hogfather, except for Teatime and the Auditors. I'm also not a huge fan of CoM, because the world is still foetal, but I'm expecting to like a lot of this, except for this casting decision. I'm even willing to see a good performance by Sean, but that's neither here nor there.

Y'know, in Kidby's illustrations Twoflower is definitely Asian. This is a movie idiocy, not a result of the books.

I never said it was a result of the books. Though I'd argue just as strongly that Kidby's illustrations are no more canon than Kirby's, who portrayed Twoflower as actually having four eyes.

It's a casting problem, but it's still a problem.

...Not really Sam Gamgee.
