So. Paul 1 was inna museum today, and I met him, Paul 2 and Richard - P1's PhD student and now P2's post doc - for lunch. Which was nice, in a 'wow, why am I still not comfortable in the company of palaeontologists - they're supposed to be me!' kinda way

Yeah, cross-gender or girl-girl normally seems to mean hug, so maybe he just didn't feel well enough acquainted to hug, but isn't in the habit of shaking girls' hands?
