god, so angry

So I've been following the ripples through the feminist blogosphere about the guy who shot up a women's fitness class after a course in being a "pick-up artist" failed to get him all the sex he wanted. Tycho and Gabe at Penny Arcade joined in with some fail on the subject, in the last few days; well, Gabe failed, Tycho didn't, for which I do give ( Read more... )

That's the part that annoys me after EVERY lunatic shoots up a school or goes on a racially motivated rampage or rapes and eats people...the hours and hours of them going on about WHY they did it. Like I'd ever even want to approach being able to go "Oh, I see your point now!!! Of course you had to murder all of those people!!! We can all be friends now!!!"

WTF

Semantics has use, but using it to justify literally any and all behavior is totally idiotic.

And yes, why does virtually EVERY show have to collapse into blatant misogynist tripe??? :(

Yeah, I saw that on PA and just...refused to process for a while I think. You're so right on on all of this *eyeroll*

At first I thought maybe they were doing some sort of...joke set-up? In bad taste, but still, a joke. And nope, not so much. Ugh.

Yeah, it's that fundamental misunderstanding that I've found a lot of geeky boys have: that girls are HARD and we try to trick them, OMG! When really, the underlying problem is that PEOPLE are hard, and new relationships are hard, and often those types of people probably haven't made many new friends since highschool...men OR women. And most of the women that they would actually be interested in because of shared geekiness...probably have the same anxiety problems they do (esp. since suceptability to anxiety and depression increase with intelligence and education). Word to geeky guys: We're not trying to trick you yo, we're just as nervous as you are!!

I was going to make some comment about anxious geek girls rising up, but...well I think most of us would really rather sit in our rooms in isolation. So...anxious geek girls sit down? :-D

Anxious geek girls are going to take a nap now! We'll let you know when we're available for calls! Wait, we hate the phone. E-mails, perhaps.

Oh, wow. Just... seriously, what the fuck Gabe at Penny Arcade? Seriously? "Feminine wiles"? Jesus.

As to the SGU thing - I dunno. Hard to judge what a story is going to be like based on a casting call. They seem pretty adamant about the physically thin thing - which is bizarre but usually casting calls aren't so hardcore, so I wonder if there's a production reason for it? I dunno. It's definitely sucky, but judging what a story would be on a casting call is a bit much.

The use of the phrases "physically useless" and "finally experience intimacy" is disgusting. Being paralyzed does not make you subhuman. I do take your point that there is a chance the episode could be pulled off well, but I'm not optimistic, and the language in the casting call itself is ablist and upsetting.

And yeah, I don't even know what Gabe was thinking. Argh.

Actually, I apologise. You're right. I was focused on the thin thing - which they reiterated at the end. But those other phrases are terribly ablist and really sound like they were written by someone who doesn't know a differently-abled person.

And yeah, I don't even know what Gabe was thinking. Argh.

It worries me that any guy actually thinks some of the things he said were okay anywhere, let alone an online forum. I mean he jumped straight into evil, manipulative women argument - WTF? Tycho did a great job in response.

I really thought maybe it was some kind of parody or joke at first, but...yeah, not so much. It would have been in poor taste, but I kind of expect that from PA, y'know?
