god, so angry

So I've been following the ripples through the feminist blogosphere about the guy who shot up a women's fitness class after a course in being a "pick-up artist" failed to get him all the sex he wanted. Tycho and Gabe at Penny Arcade joined in with some fail on the subject, in the last few days; well, Gabe failed, Tycho didn't, for which I do give ( Read more... )

Oh, wow. Just... seriously, what the fuck Gabe at Penny Arcade? Seriously? "Feminine wiles"? Jesus.

As to the SGU thing - I dunno. Hard to judge what a story is going to be like based on a casting call. They seem pretty adamant about the physically thin thing - which is bizarre but usually casting calls aren't so hardcore, so I wonder if there's a production reason for it? I dunno. It's definitely sucky, but judging what a story would be on a casting call is a bit much.

The use of the phrases "physically useless" and "finally experience intimacy" is disgusting. Being paralyzed does not make you subhuman. I do take your point that there is a chance the episode could be pulled off well, but I'm not optimistic, and the language in the casting call itself is ablist and upsetting.

And yeah, I don't even know what Gabe was thinking. Argh.

Actually, I apologise. You're right. I was focused on the thin thing - which they reiterated at the end. But those other phrases are terribly ablist and really sound like they were written by someone who doesn't know a differently-abled person.

And yeah, I don't even know what Gabe was thinking. Argh.

It worries me that any guy actually thinks some of the things he said were okay anywhere, let alone an online forum. I mean he jumped straight into evil, manipulative women argument - WTF? Tycho did a great job in response.

I really thought maybe it was some kind of parody or joke at first, but...yeah, not so much. It would have been in poor taste, but I kind of expect that from PA, y'know?

Didn't we just have this same feminist debate over the open source boob project? I remember the same rhetoric of male entitlement.
