So I've been following the ripples through the feminist blogosphere about the guy who shot up a women's fitness class after a course in being a "pick-up artist" failed to get him all the sex he wanted. Tycho and Gabe at Penny Arcade joined in with some fail on the subject, in the last few days; well, Gabe failed, Tycho didn't, for which I do give props. The argument was, I believe, something along the lines of "But women ARE really scary, and awkward men DO need someone to tell them a formula to get in women's pants." The counterargument is so basic I don't even know how to talk about it, though Tyco delivered it with pretty typical biting sarcasm-- uh, women are *people*, not a Mysterious Unified Bloc of Other? Going after them like you're hunting antelope from a jeep on a safari with a tour guide is appalling?
I just. I just don't even, you guys, it makes me so angry I can't breathe properly.
Let's break this down, shall we? Socially awkward men deserve, are *entitled to*, a guidemap to sex that allows them to conceptualize women as scary and inexplicably malfunctioning robots who aren't responding to a set of commands. If they persist in malfunctioning, well, it's not COMPLETELY inexplicable why a guy would be forced to shoot them due to all of his unreleased testosterone. Not getting laid is really tough, y'all.
As for socially awkward women?
...what about them? Do they even exist? Can't they just get a cat or something? Women don't get sexually frustrated. Women don't even *like* sex. It's men who want it need it gotta have it. Socially awkward women (especially those who aren't pretty enough and/or are fatties, amirite?) just disappear. They certainly wouldn't receive sympathy if they shot anybody. After all, men are individuals and can't be expected to respond to a blanket set of instructions.
In fact, you know what, those awkward women? They should be grateful if predators do come after them. After all, don't they want someone to want to fuck them? God, those stuck-up bitches.
(Don't forget the part, either, where women have a lot more REASON to be afraid of talking to men than vice versa. I can't think of the source of this quote offhand, but think about it- Men's greatest fear about women is that women will laugh at them. Women's greatest fear about men is that men will kill them.)
Oh, and then just to top off my RAGE SUNDAE, Stargate: Universe pops up with some truly epic
ablism AND sexism blended into a cocktail.
This world is so fucked up.
