[give in to love or live in fear]

Last night redbrickrose and I went to see RENT. It was the current tour that has Anthony Rapp and Adam Pascal, so that was cool. Actually, I was most impressed by the actors playing Mimi, Angel, and Collins, but there is definitely just SOMETHING about seeing Adam and Anthony as Roger and Mark. ::hearthands::

I mean, okay, the fact that they are way, way too old for these roles (I LOVE THEM BUT IT'S TRUE) meant that there was some unintentionally weird subtext in "Another Day" ("You look like you're sixteen" oh Roger you CREEPER). And Pascal didn't quite bring the energy, the barely-controlled anger at the universe, that Roger really needs to make sense. (If you don't get the feeling that he's *scared* and therefore *angry* and lashing out blindly, he comes off as kind of an emotionally abusive asshole whom Mimi should run away from very fast...umm, hi, my name is Samantha and I have Thoughts about RENT that I have never put down on LJ before because they make me sound like a wacko.)

Anyway! I was a teensy bit disappointed in Roger, but the Collins/Angel performances were *amazing* and I really liked the way the actress playing Mimi approached her, and Anthony Rapp definitely was on his game all the way. The singing voices of the Joanne and Maureen actors didn't quite work for me, but their physical performances, the way they related to each other on-stage, were awesome.

The fact that Rapp and Pascal *have* played these roles so long meant that they really authentically have the rapport of old friends, which does great things for their duets. Oh, "What You Own." Love. And the Roger/Collins dynamic presented here was really physical and affectionate, which was different from previous performances I've seen and which I really liked a lot.

I like theater. \o/

I wish RENT was still Yuletide-eligible, because there are so many stories I want to read. I'll have to dig through what's already out there and see if any of it satisfies.

I woke up early this morning from a stress dream about work, which...well, that's awesome, obviously, so I think I'm going to have some birthday cake for breakfast and see if I can knock out my bsg_remix.
