Exactly. Never mind that they're proudly declaring the existence of an all-female team just to pointlessly kill one of them with no emotional impact at all, and to send another back to Earth.
Wow. All-female team for half an hour. Now I'm impressed.
Yeah, and she died in a complete state of stupid. "Oh, come on. Are we really going to believe PLG that there are "demons" in the woods?" Because, you know, being on a planet that contains one of Michael's labs in no way equates with the fact that there might be something unnatural in the woods.

Yes! Aggggh! Like in The Shrine, which I liked in many respects but completely loathed for their treatment of both Ronon and Teyla with regards to Ronon's solution ... at least the writers bothered to include Ronon snarking back with "Did I say it was magic?"
Yes, in fanon "anything is possible in the Pegasus Galaxy" but in canon it seems that wildly improbable? Sure, no problem. But logically and statistically highly likely? Suddenly no one from the Milky Way has an ounce of common sense and just blows it all off.
I agree with each and every word you said. This episode is even worse than Irresponsible, which, to date, was at the top of my personal "Least Favorite Episodes". And, oh look! Both episodes were written by Mallozzi & Mullie. This does not bode well at all for the movie. I think we'd all better resign ourselves for the complete end of the series. And, sadly, if this is the kind of quality we can expect from the movies, I'll be okay with that. I'd rather my show die while I still love it than have it continue in the hands of these talentless hacks until I hate it.
But, yeah, this episode was so bad I actually had to quit watching halfway through to let my brain cells recover from the dumb.

So true on Irresponsible, too. I considered going through episode lists and doing a little better in terms of xrefing similar or identical crap found elsewhere in the series to date, but then I was both quite tired by then and sort of felt like the passionate fans already know this from their own jaw-dropping moments of viewer fail.
I thought this episode was boring and largely pointless. I was seriously annoyed by the 'OMG, you're all girls?' thing (yes, Sheppard should know the details of the gate teams and the details of the station personnel in general), and I loathed the hand-bonking. It was totally ridiculous and insulting. I also couldn't stand Sheppard's, 'Now, you ladies just go up there and sit tight while I deal with the situation' plan at the end. "Sit tight"? Are you kidding me? Sheppard, once again, demonstrates that he has no idea how to deal with competent women.
I like the idea of more female characters in SGA fandom, and I was actually pretty impressed they didn't all die (that only one of them died), but I don't like the way it was handled. Also, the storyline was pointless.

I agree! It was the sort of thing that might have been tolerable and even sort-of understandable in a "Milky Way guys are sexist" sort of way in an episode like the one with the three queens battling it out for supremacy (Harmony's two older sisters were cute).

Yes on all counts. I'm sad to realise I don't even have an icon of a female SGA character, and how crazy is that? In S1, I was so impressed with strong female characters like Elizabeth and Teyla, and then they were demoted to the "what's going on?" role or the "stay here and watch over 'x, y, z' so you don't get hurt" role and I just started doing *facepalms* over and over.
Well, I made it about half way through the episode before it drove me out of the room, but sad to say, I have to agree with most of your review.
I do take exception to the assumption that John should have known he had an all female team. Unless he was personally acquainted with each of them, it wouldn't have come up; in military speak first names are just never, never used so it wouldn't have been obvious. And there is a huge distance between the base commander and a sergeant. But egad, did it grate when that girl used the phrase "all girls". Again, SO NOT military-speak.

I suppose that I continue to operate under the assumption that this base has a ridiculously small number of military for the size of the facility. In S1 there was mention of (or fans have determined that???) the entire expedition included about 200 people?
Thus, I tend to assume that yeah, John does have at least passing-in-the-hallways acquaintance with each of them.
In fairness to the canon writers, they may be operating under the assumption that there is a massively expanded military contingent on the base since the introduction of the Daedalus, the Apollo, and the gatebridge. I don't recall hearing/seeing any details as to how many people that might now include. I definitely default back to approximately 200 people in my mind.

Ahh, because my husband is retired Navy, and my youngest daughter is active Navy my defualt is more or less a standard U.S. base. With a small contingent like in s.1, I see the critism.
I would love to see the GLBT gate team, though! At least give a bit of recognition to other cultures making up the expedition. I guess I was out of the room by the time the gate team scenes came up in Whispers, figures I'd miss the one redeeming aspect of the episode.

Heh, yeah, no kidding. I suppose yet another good thing about the show's cancellation is that they probably won't have time to kill off Radek. I have no doubt he'd be chopped by S6 if there were one. *shakes head at weird canon subtexty thingies they've been doing*

If you blinked you could have missed it ... I mean, it was there in the 'I've got your back'-type moments that kept cropping up even with silent-snarky behind-the-back eyerolling through much of the episode, but basically when the team had that little gender-awareness standoff moment in the forest, I felt the four actors playing the female gate team came across as a team that really was together and really did believe in their abilities as the best and the brightest
