The pockets are really useful for when you're doing field work. You just reach down and voila: there is your notebook, GPS, radio, phone, pencil, etc. Otherwise you're digging in those front pockets which things tend to fall out of or trying to take off your pack. I never thought much of wearing cargo pants as casual wear, only when I hadn't done laundry. Maybe that's how the trend got started, people with cool jobs having to wear their work clothes out and about because they hadn't gotten around to doing laundry or just not owning any other pants.

"cargo cult pants"... heh, brilliant. for whatever reason, this is making me happy sorta like sudo make me a sandwich did, so, well done. :)

and... criminy, of course I had some - back in the 80s, but then I also have to confess that I still have a couple pairs of rave pants I used to wear dancing that are nothing if not, um.. hrm.. "incriminatingly-bepocketed". (..well, I guess the silver lining is that I weigh 40 lbs less than I did eight months ago, and now that I'm down to my college-freshman weight again I'm theoretically able to actually wear the rave gear again. heh.)
