eyes

For the past 6 months or so, I've been having trouble reading. It's weird... I've always processed words automatically -- Looking at a sign and seeing what it says are a single, indivisible action. But lately whether it's a sign or a book or a computer, I have to concentrate for a second to look at it properly. It feels like my eyes have forgotten ( Read more... )

I had an MRI when I was 15 or so (migraines), and the technician was this stoner dude who offered to put on a movie for me while I was in the tube (they had a specially shielded TV and metal-free plastic tube headphones hooked up to it). He rattled off a list of DVDs - "[Disney cartoon], [Disney cartoon], [Disney cartoon], 'The Wall', [Disney Cartoon]...."

I stopped him and said "Ooo, Pink Floyd's 'The Wall'? I wanna watch that!"

And he thought I was insane.

But I watched 'The Wall' while entombed in a giant metal tube, and was happy as a clam (in a metal tube).

Are you on any medications? Last time I had a verbal processing problem like that (not exactly the same, but it seems similar enough), it was 100% medication-related (I was taking Lamictal). I had to keep increasing the dose over time as each previous dose stopped working, and eventually the problem got so bad that I just couldn't take it anymore and had to stop altogether.

Hypothesis based on minimal data, not much more than conjecture:

The times you miss words or have to look at a sign again are the times you -notice- the problem, which happen to be when the words fall within your astigmatism pattern. When you stop and refocus, you're looking with a different part of your eye (or now with both eyes), and so it becomes all good again.

Glasses? You? They better be Buddy Holly glasses!

MRI's are fun. I actually dozed off during my first one.

You know, I tried on a few of the thick-framed glasses, but I couldn't find any that didn't make me look like a raccoon. Now that I think about it, they classic Buddy Holly lenses and classic Buddy Holly frames, but I don't think they had them in combination.
