I must be attracting BTBs (Big Thick Books) lately: Harry Potter VI, Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell, and now the Sword of Shannara Trilogy -- over 1000 pages of magical mayhem and some of the most derivative scenes I've ever read.

Fortunately the subsequent books are much better.

Yeah, the second book is a Stephen R. Donaldson rip-off instead. (Although, to be fair, I still cried at the end of that one. But by the third book of the Shannara series I had definitely lost interest and gave up.)
