Special Agent Dana Scully looked around in wonder. She and her partner had just spent three weeks on a spaceship; that Earth actually had a spaceship at all was still making her reel a little. Given the number of waivers, NDAs, and other forms they'd had to sign just to talk about making the trip, she thought maybe it shouldn't be such a surprise after all.
The trip from Earth had been somewhat surreal (and a tad bit boring), but she was amazed to find out that the commander of the spaceship was a cousin of their boss. They not only looked somewhat alike, but they both shared that surliness that seemed to come naturally to their boss when her partner was around.
Still, they'd had nearly a full run of the ship. (When she'd asked the Colonel about the few areas that were restricted she'd gotten a grumbled half-response, where "little gray men obsession" was one of the few things she had understood.)
Now on the most remote of bases, her partner was nearly spinning in circles, looking at what was around them. She had to admit to being impressed and awed herself. The place was gorgeous - and very clearly alien.
They stood in the big open area with a giant ring set on one end (and what was that? decoration? or did it have some functional purpose?) waiting for the military leaders to meet with them, as promised. Upon arrival they'd hoped to be greeted by the leader of the base, a Ph.D. whose work Mulder was apparently familiar with, but Dr. Weir was in a trading meeting she was unable to get out of. They'd been asked to instead meet with the military leader of the base. Now they stood, gawking like tourists, while indistinguishable mumblings came from above.
Scully looked to the stairs as she heard feet coming down them. The feet were attached to two men, fine specimens of Air Force Officer if she'd ever seen them (and who thought a girl raised around Navy men could ever think that of Zoomies?) The one on the left had broad, strong shoulders and a wary aura; he looked like he'd be very comfortable carrying a good-sized repeating weapon. Her first impression was one of the kind of man slow to smile but, when he did, giving one worth the wait. The other man was a bit taller and a bit less broad-shouldered, but no less the soldier, and, unlike the other, quick to smile and put on the charm. This was the one they needed to watch out for, making a mental note to herself.
Scully wasn't sure how her partner had talked the US Government into sending them billions of miles on one of his supernatural goose chases, but this one might turn out to be interesting. And if these two were any indication, a little fun, too.
"Hello," greeted the charmer, "I'm Lt. Colonel John Sheppard, military leader of the Atlantis base. This is my second-in-command, Major Evan Lorne. What can we do for you nice folks?"
"Special Agent Dana Scully, FBI," she replied, pulling out her badge out of habit but belatedly realizing it was silly -- they'd been already grilled six ways to Sunday and she was sure these folks knew as much about them as possible before they had even stepped on the Daedalus. "This is my partner, Special Agent Fox Mulder. We're here to talk to you about - er -"
"Vampires," her partner cut in. "We're here because we understand you have information about vampires."
She watched Sheppard and Lorne look at each other and, as if of one mind, roll their eyes.
... and, I do want to flesh this out to a full fic. I have some thoughts on where to take it.
