After all that had happened, everything involved with the fighting between dragons, who would have thought that a bullet could bring him down. An ordinary bullet at that had successfully brought their Kamui to the very edges of death. Succeeding in barely a second where Kamui had taken months to reach. It all happened so quickly and perhaps that was cliché but it was true. One moment they were talking and the next Kamui was face down on the ground in a steadily growing puddle of his own blood.

And now there was nothing to do but wait. Wait and hope for the best.

It had been well over three hours since that had happened, since Yuzuriha had been asked to take a seat while they made an initial overview. She was still coated in his blood from when she’d tried to control the bleeding while waiting for the ambulance. It had dried long ago, leaving the fabric of her top and trousers stiff. Not that it really mattered to her right now; clothing could be replaced whereas he couldn’t be. She could still hear the doctor’s voices in her head, still see their worried looks between each other, they’d told her to go home and stay with someone in an attempt to calm her down but she knew it was more for the fact that they might have more bad news. She couldn’t go home and leave him here though, not until one of the others showed up to take over anyway.

They were the only ones that had stayed in this area, both taking up apartments in the same building, opposite each other in fact, while others had moved out to either find new homes in the area or leave Tokyo entirely. The only one relatively close by was the former other Kamui, he was out of the country this week and Yuzuriha had barely been able to tell him that an accident had happened before someone effectively caught him on the phone, a teacher if anything which had brought a few fleeting seconds of amusement.

Right now though she was simply trying to stay awake, boredom making her feel tired as she slowly swung her legs back and forth. She absently wondered why hospitals even had televisions when the sound was always turned off; it ruined it as a distraction really.

A hand on her shoulder quickly stopped her from spiralling back to how this whole mess was essentially her fault. Yuzuriha slowly turned to look up at the nurse; she looked tired but certainly wasn’t wearing one of those sympathetic looks which generally came with bad news. Her hopes lifted a little bit. The nurse smiled gently before nodding her head down the corridor, turning to walk in that direction, obviously an invitation to follow which Yuzuriha quickly acted upon.

As they walked through the bleached white halls only one thing really crossed her mind, the accident slowly repeated itself from start to finish in her thoughts. Things had been fine; the two of them had been walking back after a particularly bad film while making fun out of certain parts of it. Generally acting their ages for once, in Kamui’s case it was also a chance for him to show his more sociable side, it was an opportunity to see each other again after being separated by exam schedules. She couldn’t clearly remember what happened after that, Kamui seemed to notice something which she didn’t and had moved in front of her. A gun shot, a thud and then the sound of running. She’d crouched down to Kamui, thinking he’d been hit by a pellet gun or something, and nudged him a few times while tell him he could get up. She didn’t notice anything was wrong until she saw that bright red colour slowly moving out from underneath the older boy. Frantically Yuzuriha had turned him over only to be greeted by a quickly

spreading red stain across the front of Kamui’s shirt.

Such a deep red...

Yuzuriha stopped slightly in the doorway of the room Kamui was currently occupying. He looked terrible and she was almost afraid to go anywhere near him, so fragile looking. There were a number of machines on the other side of the bed he was in, one being a heart monitor and another looking like some kind of breathing device, there was an IV on the nearest side of the bed. Kamui himself was hooked up to a number of wires which were placed in his arms and a single one near his neck. His breathing was heavier than normal although that was probably to be expected right now, he looked over in Yuzuriha’s direction with a glazed expression. She was sure that he was being given something for the pain by the way he was awkwardly propped up and looking at her with a lazy and dopey expression. His hand twitched slightly, an attempt to wave her over she assumed.

Who was she to turn down that look right now? It took a lot of her control just to stop her from running over the room to his bedside.

She pulled up a nearby chair and sat next to him, trying to talk but merely stuttering out false starts. What could she say? Sympathy would be unwanted and everything else just seemed inappropriate. Yuzuriha looked up slowly when she felt a hand gently rest against her face, that sleepy stare directed straight at her.

“Kamui--”

Very slowly he shook his head and tapped her cheek before letting his hand fall away. The message was clear even without words, she shouldn’t apologise because it wasn’t her fault. She knew that even if she protested he wouldn’t accept it in any way. Very slowly the younger dragon placed her hand over his as she leaned forward slightly, resting her head very lightly against his shoulder. Even if this wasn’t her fault she still felt guilty. Kamui nudged her with his chin slightly, carefully and slowly, to get her attention. A very smile and sleepy smile across his face when he managed to catch her glance, his own hand turning to hold her one.

“...be fine...”

His words were slurred; obviously he was being given some rather strong stuff if it caused something like that. Yuzuriha nodded slowly, a ghost of a smile crossing her own lips as she did so.

“I know...” She paused, “Get some sleep. I’ll stay here as long as they let me.”

The boy nodded, eyelids slowly dropping as he shifted closer to her. Something unconscious by now, he’d done it back at apartments and apparently wasn’t ashamed to do it in a public place either. That could be due to whatever he was taking making him forget that fact though...

Yuzuriha watched him for a few moments, dozing instead of actually sleeping. Her eyes slowly strayed downwards to where a larger series of bandages were covering his chest, a deep red starting to seep through the fabric. Absently she traced her fingers over the area, a feather light touch, comparing that red colour to her still bloodied hands. She should wash them before people started to question it. Her gaze moved back to Kamui’s face, her free hand moving to absently run through his hair in a comforting gesture.

He’d get better soon. Then he’d come home and she could apologise in her own way, subtle little treats in the form of sweets perhaps.

Kamui made a soft sound as he seemed to slip into a deeper sleep. She smiled a little more before leaning forward and brushing a soft kiss across his cheek, she lingered for a few moments before pulling back enough to rest her head on the bed beside his shoulder.

He’d get better soon and she’d stay until he did.
