Next to Normal

Tonight ironekilz and I went to see a musical at the Arena Stage theatre. Working in Crystal City, I had seen ads for the theatre around, as the Arena Stage has a temporary location in Crystal City not too far from where my office is. I had heard decent things about the current show, but hadn't really paid more than passing attention to the details. ( Read more... )

I would've posted on this, but it seems you beat me to it. ;) I second that it was a very good show. At certain points it really resonated with me since mental illness, particularly depression, runs in my family and I felt myself misting up. At other points I could hear other people in the audience very clearly choking back sobs.

I was surprised looking around to see how many young people were in the audience. I don't go to plays very much either, but most of the plays I've been to have been attended by older people. I can't help but wonder whether this difference was due to the nature of the show or whether it's just because Arena Stage is so accommodating to younger viewers (there's a promotion going on for people under 30 to get $10 tickets).

*sigh*

I love live theatre, especially musicals. I'm going to have to check out the situation in Savannah, and local schools (don't laugh, but I love school productions for some reason.) Steve, however, doesn't do musicals, which means I either need to find a friend or start going alone.

I don't know if it's still open, but when we lived in Woodbridge, I worked for a while at the Lazy Susan Dinner Theatre. They always seemed to do a really good job (and the food was good, too.)

Out of curiosity, I just checked...www.lazysusan.com. And Oh. My. God. I really really want to be back in the area. Christies' A Witness for the Prosecution; Showboat; You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown *and* Once Upon a Mattress.

Sometimes life's just not fair.
